Title: Good Night "Vienna"
Post by hazelnut on Nov 30th, 2008 at 11:05am
Went to the Vienna sandwich bar last night, very impressive building, and is smells better than a fish market, which the old building used to be!
It was bright cheery and warm the restoration of the building tastefully done!

The food was a cross between Subway Mc Donalds and Burger King, I let you draw your own conclusions from that !, a Restaurant it is not, its queue up self service, but the food was OK for that type of place.

They do serve Beer and wine, beer served in pot tankards very Viennese

It was a good meal though some things tastier than others served in paper and cardboard a la Mc Donalds
The sweets are all tubs of ice cream sorbet or Sarah Lee chocolate cake or deli cakes

Two can eat for about €20 including drinks and postre

Now the really good thing about the place, the chain has taught the Staff, the meaning of the word SERVICE!!

You actually get attention and a warm welcome, the staff don't stand chatting to themselves instead of serving you the paying customer, as you would expect from a fast food place you get served quickly and efficiently, I was taken aback, I am not used to being served quickly in Spain

Would I go again? possibly if I needed a quick meal and I was in a rush Or I had children to feed.
I think the Kebab houses though a bit scruffy around the edges serve better tastier food.

The surprise was that it was absolutely packed, and at 7:30 and not just with parents taking young children, but there were oldies in there as well!!

Building and Decor       10 out of 10
Service and Politeness  10 out of 10
Food and drink               6 out of 10

Well its different, its not a rip off, its fast food as you know it, but generally good

But I still can't get over being served and seen as a customer not a hindrance!!

Hello,
Where exactly is the ex fish market please, is it near the indoor market in Tortosa ?

Title: Re: Good Night "Vienna"
Post by hazelnut on Nov 30th, 2008 at 4:37pm
Location is next to the indoor market heading towards the millenium bridge , it's a  huge building with rounded ends, excuse the pun but it's sandwiched between the indoor market and the doner kebab house alongside the river, it is brightly lit so you can't miss it

Well you have obviously never been to the Viena by Leroy Merlin otherwise you would have known what to expect.
Personally we lilke the viena as not only is the service good, but they normally serve free pastries with the tea in the afternoon.
Ano not only that but they do vegetarian options as well.

Vienna in Leroys is really good.
It came recommended to us by some really nice people and it proved itself.
Excellent food excellent service and good veggie options, unlike Vienna (the city) itself where we just ""tourists""
Just my opinion :)

Well I thought I would just go to the kebab house next to Viennas' today, to test out my opinions versus the Vienna, and I have to conclude that although it is a bit shabby, the food is by far better than McViennas, much tastier and the chilli sauce is great, and they have gone up market and got some new posh plates.

So Kebab rules for me! it was only €20 for 4 as opposed to €20 for two at the Vienna

So Kebab House wins on at least 2 counts

Well all I can say is that if you had a degree in the Hotel and Catering Management and an Advance Food Science Diploma, both of which I have, you would not set your mush anywhere near a doner kebab.  Just a disaster waiting to happen !!

Tony, that has to be one of the most childish responses i have ever heard. If you dont like kebabs, fair enough, but to tell the world your qualifications to score a weak point is a bit rubbish isnt?

I was in Vienna and asked for a can of coke, the girl told me they had none. She went to get my upmarket McDonald burger and her pal stuck her hand under the counter and walked off with a can of coke. Nice one i thought, not been in since.
Before this i was in the McVienna in Barcelona and the staff there had obviously been on a McDonalds training course as they were as gormless as their big brother. They weren't even any 5 star generals to sort the mess out.

Never had a problem with kebabs, and trust me, i've had a few.

Live and let live Anthony, you will be more relaxed for it.

So what......I've got a degree in Applied Irish Science and my good lady has a masters in 'I told you so's 'and the Kebabs are still better. And you can have a beer. And you can watch a Bollywood movie...

I'm inclined to agree with Tony, after 50yrs in the meat trade I would not touch a kebab with a skewer at forty paces! All the gentlmen from Greece, Turkey and all parts east have not been taught good health and hygeine routines but, "one man's meat" and all that..........keep taking the pills!!

Title: Re: Good Night "Vienna"
Post by Tony on Dec 2nd, 2008 at 9:27pm
Thanks Old Nelson for your support.
So those who run Viena keep a coke under the counter, at least it is not on top of a warm counter with flies crawling all over it breeding a nice case of salmonella or similar.
Once again the wicked moderator is not allowed to have thoughts and to back them up with why he should think like he does.  If I had said what I did without backing up my words you would have been on here now asking me what the hell I knew about it, so I pre-empted the question.  And because someone has been lucky enough not to suffer from food poisoning yet does not show that they have specialised knowledge on the subject of kebabs.  Well that is alright by me as I know that you will not be asking me around to enjoy the barbecued chicken which is black on the outside and red on the inside.

There is nothing like a good kebab. Stops you getting fat after 12 or 15 pints on a friday night and tastes good too.
Dont care whats in them, cos a few small germs help keep the big ones away.
Chili sauce rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Incidently I had my own restaurant/bistro for many years which was run to exemplary standards. Got more certificates than money
;)
PS Kebabs make you short sighted

Which all goes to prove my case, when I stayed away on business, I never ate in a hotel, and I am still here to tell the tale, most small hotels and pubs use food chains and catering suppliers for their meals. and the kitchen staff are usually no older than McDonalds staff or so old they still use tea towels to dry up with.

I had a tour round one of  Bookers suppliers once!! Mechanically extracted meat and connected tissue come to mind, they couldn't even call their sausages by that name as there was only 5% meat in them, they had to call them bangers

And yes I have seen a documentary on how Kebabs are constructed and what goes into them, but I take my Simvastatins daily and tuck in, you can't beat a  Doner Kebab

Yes, then I presume that you used to stay at chain hotels, you should have gone independant.  But I ageree that there are many unhygienic hotels and having toured the kitchens of some of the top hotels in the UK many of things that I have seen have made me wince.  Some of them are even famous for their afternoon teas whilst enjoying a day out in London.
One thing I did not say in my posting was that I did not like doners I just said that I would not eat one.  Unfortunately my training has exposed me to the risks of eating certain types of food and the number of outbreaks recorded of food poisoning from kebabs has made me very suspicious of them, like it has of eating barbecued chicken and rice in Chinese restaurants.
I wonder how many people who have suffered from food poisoning have actually associated it with a donder kebab.  Most of the general public who have suffered a bout of poisoning only look back to what they have eaten on the previous day whereas certain strains can be caused by something eaten upto a week before by which time the dodgy doner will have been forgotten.
Still enough on the subject we are all made different and we all have different opions.  If we didn't it would be a very boring world and we would not then be able to have these discussions on the forum

He probably does not have the necessary degrees and certificates ....and also got worried by the sheer number of unhygenic Kebab Houses and Chinkies surrounding the airports spewing out salmonella and germs towards the assembled "Aviation Enthusiasts"

;)

Still, looking on the bright side, at least nobody has been pedantic enough to point out that it is in fact Viena, not Vienna .....

Hazelnut,
you're talking a load of "b......s" about meat content in sausages, it is law in the UK and EU for butchers and catering suppliers to have a minimum meat content which includes, fat and all excruded meat and content from bones to be 65% in pork sausages and 55% in beef sausages and they are periodically analysed by local inspectors and if found below that % there is court action and a large fine.
I am not against you or anybody else eating kebabs and enjoying them but maybe you should ask yourself one question when you go into buy one, bearing in mind how big the roll of meat is on the spit, how many times has it been heated and gone cold over a week, as it is not possible to be sold in one day.
Anyway I'm sorry to bore you, enjoy.....enjoy.....enjoy.

If you noticed I said Bangers and not sausages, I agree with you regarding meat content in sausages,a nd as a rule unless they are walls of course you get very good sausages from your local butchers shop but I said bangers and no rules apply to them!! you must have experienced good butchery practices, and never come across  the low end of makro type food suppliers

Its no use telling them that Old Nelson as the majority will not realise that food should not be heated more than once without the risk of causing food poisoning.

As for bangers or sausages Hazelnut it is just a case of calling a rose by any other name.  They are still trying to sell an inferior sausage by a name the public will recognise and I am sure that the T S officers will be on to the ruse.

So,in conclusion, for fear of killing ourselves by eating anything processed, reheated, reconstituted,UHT'ed,steralized, radiated, microwaved, dried, fried, kept warm, feng wotsited or sold at McDonalds, what's the answer........????

Title: Re: Good Night "Vienna"
Post by Xertaboy on Dec 4th, 2008 at 10:41am
The answer is obvious....we all go round to Tony's and he can show us how it should be done, while telling us about all his Degrees/qualifications and experiences of the food trade......take a couple of matchsticks along!!!!!!! (by the way.....for those of you UNEDUCATED folk.....the matches don't go into the food.....they're to keep your eyes open.....)

Then when we've all woken from our slumber......I'm with Hazelnut........WE HEAD DOWN TO THE KEBAB SHOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just to get back onto the topic of Viena.  The only food I've tried from there was a bite out of son's burger and I thought it was pretty horrible and the few chips that I tried were worse than horrible.  It isn't cheap either.

Soon the main road will be littered with franchised food chains,

With the small number of customers they seem to have recently, I cannot see how they can run a building of it's size.
Obviously the rates and wages are a lot lower than in England, and it has the space for large parties to meet and sit and talk without feeling pressurised to drink up and move, as happens in England !

Well if your son must order a hamburger in Spain what do you expect.  Why not try their Spanish fast food instead.  The bocadillos and fluetas I have had at the Tarragona branch have been very good.
Seriously though, we were up at Leroy Merlins today and stopped for a cup of tea at Viena.  I can honestly say that it is the best cup of tea that I have had in Spain (really strong instead of the usual dishwater), and the free pastries at tea-time are good also.

The worst cup of tea I have ever had in Spain was at a restaurant on the way to the Playa de Marquesa on the delta where it was made completely with milk - ugh !!

Blimey Tony, do you patronise everyone or just a chosen few? ::)    We eat Spanish/catalan food almost every day of the week so having a burger was for a change.  It was rubbish and so were the chips.   And doesn't it strike you as even slightly ironic that you then go on to praise them for that least Spanish of commodities 'a nice cup of tea'??  ;D

Happy New Year,
It's a B&Q type place on the same retail park as Carrefour and Leroy Merlins at Tarragona.
I think it's a German company, they have some good special offers.
