Hi,
You won't find any shops open here on Sundays, or Fiesta Days, only coming up to Christmas where they will open for a few Sundays prior to Christmas. Didn't even do that a few years ago! Don't forget tomorrow (Tuesday) is All Saints Day, so shut again. Best do your shopping today. Weedkiller can be bought from Sol Ebre, Tortosa. They will give you advice if needed. |

Most shops shut today as well. I think they've made it a long weekend. For general weeds you need Glyphosate (Glyfosato). That's a generic name, not a trade name. One of the major brands is Roundup but that's expensive and no better than the locally available generic ones. There's another type that the locals call "Cappa" or similar. That's a pre-emergent killer (as opposed to Glyphosate being post emergent). Glyphosate becomes inactive when it touches the soil and so doesn't affect crops planted there afterwards. Cappa sinks into the soil and should not be used where planting is planned for the next 3 or 4 years. Glypho is safe for animals but not near water that might hold wild life (or fish). As mentioned, Sol D'Ebre or any other co-operative will have it. It'll cost you 20 -40 € for 5 litres (it varies over time) but that will go a very long way when diluted. If you want any tips on using it, just shout.

Mayors for the 4 metre x 50 mm scaffolding planks.Cut them up yourself to your size.Works out a lot cheaper....however it's not the best wood.Worth leaving flat for a few weeks to dry out more

Thanks all for advise, very, very unfortunately I am back in UK now :'(,nobby, got wood from Mayors i end, not bad price 13 euros for 7 x 2.5 meter lengths ,not the best quality wise compared to UK, but this is Spain and still up there very primitive so cutting down scaffold planks well and that would have been sacrilege to have so much timber to only cut down when I am scratching around for a couple of nails if you see were I am coming from ! and was grateful just to be able to get it and get job done.
I really should have tried to ask about delivery up in the campo ,have seen Vega's dumped at entrance to fincas just off the camio track so reckon that they do deliver ? The farmer below me who is a fantastic old guy ,but we struggle like mad to understand each other :-/ I am sure he was trying to tell me he gets his weedkiller from somewhere near the toll booths up by the AP7, top of Tortosa did not mention what it was called but like you said Big Yin he waters it down, anyway wont be back over till Feb so time to get this sorted. I had one of my best weeks over there yet in 7 years, got quite allot done up there and I was invited for a meal by the folk above me who I have never met, and they had a friend who spoke English, which was fantastic I try every time to get round to trying to learn a bit more Spanish(forget Catalan for now) but :-[were does the time go !!! Ho and thanks Bulldog got the Super Cal, am sure it made a difference to mix, bloody hard work dealing with random stone compared to building with blocks though , I seem to get nowhere fast,I also started using the sand cement mix they sell at Mayors seem,s OK, and save,s time and only 1Euro 85 a bag, I am going to use this in future, I am sure I have asked before but do they sell bags of concrete mix at Mayors ? Thanks again Phil |

Your Spanish friend might have meant Dam in Amposta. I get mine from there. It's near the river by the N340 bridge. I dilute mine at 80:1 i.e. 120ml to 10 litres water. 10 litres (a backpack full) will treat about 1,000 sqm at a cost of about 75 cents.
All the builders yards will deliver for a charge (including Mayor) so the crack is to buy everything you need now or are planning to need in one go to dilute the delivery cost. That's why most people have a permanent pile of sand on their property for example. |

Thanks Big Yin for the advise. will make a note of the mix for future ref, is this stuff just for weeds /grass or will it do tree roots ?
Also concrete mix in bags at Mayors anyone know? Oh and whilst I'm on, any more news regarding the new /dry canal being reconstructed seems to have stopped ? |

I understand that Glyphosate can be used for killing stumps. Holes are drilled in the cut surface and neat Glyphosate poured into the holes. Of course it will take some time and there may not be much point unless you're prepared to wait for the stump to rot out. All you're doing is preventing it from re-growing. Depending on the scale of the problem it's probably just as effective to find someone with a mini digger to lift them.
http://www.diylife.com/2008/05/30/avant-yard-kill-a-tree-with-herbicide/ I don't know if Mayor sell pre-mixed concrete. Probably, as they sell most things, however, it's probably going to work out much more expensive than mixing your own depending on how much you have to do. Don't know whether the dry canal is on or off. |

Thanks Bigyin for the link, it has some great advise there,I need it ! I only found out I had olive trees last week ::)
As for concrete mix ,your right it would work out more expensive but, can fill a hire car up with bags,I cannot really have chippings/dust/sand delivered loose as it is a shared track "driveway" and doubt very much if they would get a truck up to the cassita, and I only intend to use for footings on a small-ish almacen so would not be ridiculously expensive . Thanks again for your help Phil |

How many trees have you got and are they mature fruiting trees ? If so, I'd think twice about destroying them. If you don't want to keep them, you can get a lot of firewood out of them including the grubbed up roots.
Have you worked out the cubic meterage of your footings ? |
Title: Re: 3x2 Timber Post by philmountains on Nov 6th, 2011 at 7:25am
Hi I am only going to get rid of the trees that are in the way or past there sell by date, yes I know what you mean about firewood ! the friendly old farmer is going to do some free pruning for me ;) that's farmers for you same everywhere, I bet he will be warm over the coming months.
As for measuring up for concrete ,well I have put spade to the ground, but still in planning stage at mo, I need to get my mixer etc.. over and that's been on the cards for years now LOL! but I am getting closer "i hope! money/job wise things are very rapidly going down the pan dramatically I work for the NHS " and in the last 3 months the job has changed beyond recognition, sorry to get political ,but I am only a working(TRADESMAN) not some high flyer in admin etc...... :'( |
Title: Re: 3x2 Timber Post by fatphil on Nov 6th, 2011 at 12:34pm
Phil,
I agree with what Bigyin says and would be very, very cautious giving any local permission to prune and remove trees. Giving permission like that is usually taken to mean do as you please and I have seen a land owner return to find hundreds of trees cut down and sold for firewood ! You will also set a precedent that will be difficult to reverse,as I have discovered to my cost. |
Title: Re: 3x2 Timber Post by Bigyin on Nov 6th, 2011 at 12:56pm
Fatphil may be right (couldn't say for sure). However, pruning isn't difficult to do yourself with the right tools and a bit of guidance.
If you're bringing a mixer over then not too much problem as footings for any sized Almacen would be too much to mix by hand. Do you have a decent trailer ? You could buy your own bulk materials if so. |
Title: Re: 3x2 Timber Post by philmountains on Nov 7th, 2011 at 8:15am
Hi all I was doing my own "pruning if you could call, that,s what I was doing chopping down anything!!! but ran out off time :( and I was giving the descent stuff to him anyway, he is in his eighties, so I don't expect anything too much, and why not as it will years before I get round to having a wood burner set up the way I am going he might as well benefit from it and he a damn good lookout for anything dodgy going on ,and he kept hold of my strimmer for 2 years whilst I was away for safety, and remember I'm a bit of a thicko cant speak hardly a word of Spanish let alone Catalan so we really struggle to communicate.
As for footing yes buying it loose would be best, but haven't got a van yet, need to get shut of a motorbike or two to afford one !!!!! and my old Almeria just ain't up to job of such a big drive down there with my trailer on the back so am stuck with Ryan-air and hire cars for the foreseeable future. My idea then is to use Vegas for floor joist then block in between, as this is poss feasible without need for a load of concrete (WATER) etc? what,s the opinion on this idea ? |
Title: Re: 3x2 Timber Post by Bigyin on Nov 7th, 2011 at 9:41am
"my old Almeria just ain't up to job of such a big drive down there with my trailer on the back"
I haven'y got a trailer (unfortunately) but I understand that it's not easy to get non Spanish trailers ITV'd (MOT'd) so you may have to consider buying one here. Again, I'm not a builder but Vigas and blocks is a flooring system which would still need foundations. Furthermore, I understand that they're not cheap and they're very heavy. They would probably need craning into position. Your most straightforward solution is probably to have pre-mixed concrete delivered assuming the wagon could access the site. |
