Title: SHADE TREES?
Post by Zoe on Feb 17th, 2012 at 1:06pm
Hola, i want to plant two shade trees, so that i can eventually park my car underneath... i've seen many trees around the area, that are trained, to form a shade canopy... does anyone know what they are called, or can you recommend any good shade trees to grow???? Thanks  :)

I think they are called Mulberry trees and if pruned properly can cover a large area.I also think they can be grafted together on the branches thus forming a continuous conopy from tree to tree.

The locals call the Mulberry, Silk trees.  They're very common.  They put on a lot of growth each year and need to be pruned in late autumn.

Just remember these trees do bare fruit and they stain your patio and car included. You do not want any tree or shrub that has fruit.  ;) A couple of sites below give you some names of the native trees.Good luck.

Mulberry trees are common in gardens here, and are really good shade cover.
If pruned right back in the Autumn, they will produce very little, or even no fruit.
If left unpruned they can produce a lot of fruit, which will fall when ripe and become sticky on the patio, car etc.

I think you'll find that the Mulberry trees used for shade here are hermaphrodite and therefore produce no flowers or fruit.

Mine are cut back hard every year n they still produce lovely tasting berries that make a lot of mess on the patio... ::)

There are other trees you can use like palms for example but they're expensive.  You should be able to get a couple of good sized silks from a garden centre without breaking the bank.
