do you need to have a uk tax disc on display to use a uk car on Spanish road or can you use it on a sorn with uk insurance

Have you not read all previous posts about this very subject.
There are checks being made here on foreign vehicles, and it's occupants, and how long they are over here. Sorn means you have signed a form to say the vehicle is not being used on the road! |

The mossos (catalunya police) have direct access to dvla, I got stopped last year and they told me that I was insured, and I had the road fund license.
They checked my papers and asked me if I lived here, in Spain. I said I'm on an extended holiday and off I went. The policeman spoke excellent English and was very polite. You have to have a tax disc to drive on European roads in a uk vehicle. |

Jack.
I know it makes no difference to these UK cowboys with no insurance but from Oct 2014 you do not have to display a tax disc on a UK registered vehicle. (You still have to pay the tax) https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-tax-changes The only good thing is all UK vehicles in Spain after 6 months now must be put on Spanish plates.(Unless on holiday) They may get away with the " I am on holiday" Lie once, Never mind the cement stained clothes but your vehicle Reg will be noted and the next time It's :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( I bet none of them have complied with these DVLA rules either I know some have been here for years. https://www.gov.uk/taking-vehicles-out-of-uk |

I only asked the question as I was told that I did not need road tax
In Spain and I had noticed that a number of uk cars have no road fund disc on show, but to put your minds at rest my car is fully taxed tested and insured |

You'll probably be surprised to know that most will not have a valid MOT and therefore no insurance either. |
Title: Re: uk road fund license Post by Ritaratbag on Jun 13th, 2014 at 7:28am
Or,
they think they have because the ITV station here take their money for what is the MOT in the U.K. Also some insurance companies will take money here aswell. So drivers think they are covered when they are not. But beware, as checks are being carried out! |

I pay road tax in spain at the BASE office in Tortosa
it is about time that people got their cars legal in spain. You all know who you are. If you are a resident in spain, you must do this within 30 days. |
Title: Re: uk road fund license Post by Ritaratbag on Jun 13th, 2014 at 9:11pm
Lots of people are residing here, but pretend that they are not!
Going back to the U.K to claim benefits, visit doctors etc. Driving around in Brit. registered vehicles, and not paying any taxes here. Nothing has changed in all the years that we have lived here, they still think that they can get away with it. But with all the cross references now, they will get found out, one day. |

Rita ,there are more than enough European people here in the UK, claiming UK benefits and going back to there countries with there new found free wealth ,and also using the abused NHS for there free health care ,so I hardly think that if you worked all your life in the UK and paid your way, how it can be wrong to claim a UK benefit, whilst living abroad in your twilight years.
By the way I have never claimed a damn penny from the state, but paid out all my working life. >:( |

If you decide to live in Spain and for more than 180 days,
you are expected to become a resident, and therefore abide by the rules here. So many people here, pretend that they are still living in the U.K. |
Title: Re: uk road fund license Post by catalanboy on Jun 14th, 2014 at 7:54pm
That's rubbish rita, phil is right like most british citizens of my age I have PAID 40 YRS INTO THE HEALTH SERVICE and I will dam well live where I like in the eu. and still come back to the uk to see a doctor ..... the difference is I keep a uk address. I don't begrudge any british person using the health service , as long as they have paid into it. as for people driving English registered cars in spain...... go and get a life, there is more important things going on to worry about.

Still doesn't get away from the fact that when people are living here for more than 180 days, they should become residents here.
It's not me who has made these rules. |

I wonder if you think it may be important if an un-insured and not road legal vehicle in Spain happens to kill or maim someone in your car . |

Just a note to Catalan boy and any other person who thinks there are more important things to worry about.
I watched a newly wed girl knocked off a bife and killed outright by a drunk driver. The drivers insurance was void by the fact he was previously banned for D&D. My U.K. car is on the road in Spain for most of the year, therefore it is on Spanish plates. It has a valid ITV (MOT) and I pay Spanish road tax via direct debit. Live in Spain and abide by the Spanish law. Drive a U.K. registered vehicle with no U.K. road fund licence, displayed or not, and just hope you are never caught on a camera, or, on a roadside check. There are now cross boarder links E.U. wide. People are not as invisible as they once were. Maybe it's time for some people to be looking over their shoulders. :-/ |

Did my post say anything about drink driving.. deeeeer...!!! something for you to consider a quarter of all Spanish drivers are uninsured , so next time you look in your rear view mirror and you can see the whites of the driver eyes, be very afraid .And also I don't need to be lectured about accidents, I have seen too many..... the worst countries Belgium and Germany , something about high powered cars and fast autobhans I think .

I have known people who bring a UK car over to Spain for 6 months at a time before returning it to the UK for 6 months. However... standard insurance policies from UK insurers don't tend to cover the vehicle for as much as 6 months absence from the UK at a time. (I think they are wise to the trick.) A car may be here, complete with recent MOT but that does not automatically mean that, despite having paid a premium, the insurers will entertain a claim. They don't usually need an excuse to avoid paying do they? It matters not the severity of the accident. If you're not insured then you're not insured. After that it is you that becomes liable for any compensation due - possibly millions!
To that extent National Insurance is no different. You may have paid in when asked for many years but that doesn't mean you are covered now. Just a thought... Wouldn't a form of no claims discount go down well with people who never trouble the doctor! In your dealings you know when you are 'trying to get away with it' and that is when it is an open invitation to have it bite you on the you know what. |
Title: Re: uk road fund license Post by DenGeo on Jun 15th, 2014 at 12:19pm
Just a parting note on National Insurance and the N.H.S.
When I moved here I informed the taxman and the D.W.P. and was told in no uncertain terms as long as I am resident in Spain I am not entitltled to any N.H.S. treatments and if I visit the U.K. for holiday or business I would need private health insurance. I worked from age 16 and never claimed any benefits of any sort. The E.U. rules state anyone resident in the U.K. can claim benefits, health care etc. If they decide to visit their own country or even return home to give birth then the U.K. will pay the bill. I pay Spanish taxes but I am not allowed to use the Spanish National Health System, I am not old enough. I accept that and get on with the life I have chosen. 8-) |
