I was in the same position a fortnight ago. I tried to get my nie form the embassy in NL, but they estimated it would take them 6 to 8 weeks. Instead I took a plane to Reus, was in line at the Comisaría de Policía (Carrer General Moragues 54, 43203 Reus) at 08:45 on Thursday morning, (with all the necessary papers at hand). I was out by 10:00, and could pick up my NIE the next day at 12:00. The only hickup was a "letter of motivation" that was required, signed by the inmobiliaria or the notary (I got the NIE to be able to buy a property). I had not heard about this in my preparation for application, but (as I was told) this is a new requirement.

By the way (@ Bunter) my NIE expires in three months...?
