Title: cold pressed olive oil..?
Post by flintstones on Apr 23rd, 2007 at 10:43am
Hi all:
Does anyone know where we could get some of our olives cold pressed, using the old fashioned olive press..??  not last winter, but the one before we had some made into oil for own use down at the mill, and it was ok....but have a hankering to see if we could make it super-doop by having it done in the traditional way, with some of our "bestest" olives this year coming.

HI Liz,

Can't answer your question but you might find some answers here: http://www.mapa.es/portada_en.htm.  Also, have you tried the Coop. Agricola Sant Isidre in Mas de Barberans?  I don't know if they cold press but they do produce virgin olive oil.

Good luck, and let us know if you have any joy.

Penny

Get Trev to empty your olives in the shower, strip off, jump in and start riverdancing then run like hell to the drain with a bucket....I'll be round on Wednesday

Hi Liz
Try the Moli in Tivenys. They use a modern press but it is cold press. If you pick and press on the same day you get better quality oil. The quality is dependant on the residual acidity in the olives. Less than .1% produces Extra Virgin 1. Virgin  over about 3 it becomes industrial (I think, if I have remembered the figures correctly).

Intersting site to check out is http://www.geocities.com/~gianno/angi2.html#Planting . All about olives this page is planting but much more.

So no need to do the shower thing unless you use olive oil for tanning lotion.

Cold, First press Extra Virgin Oilive Oil. Every time !

Lyn

Hi Liz,

The moli in the main street of Perello is doing it the old fashioned way. Very nice owner too, loves too give visitors the grand tour. If you are coming on the N340 from the direction of Amettla its on the left side if you enter the main street of Perello (I guess about the 10th house or so).

You could try getting an apple press and crushing your own, it would take time though, but you could do it in small batches, I'm looking forward to a curry

I have just bought a 5 litre stainless steel apple press that i have been assured by the Italian manufacturers will crush olives down to the pips so I will let you know how it works later.
Hopefully I will have gallons of organic cold pressed oil for everyone :)

Hi yes you can get them cold pressed in the traditional way at the mill in el perello. Its located on the right hand side of the main street as you exit the town  heading north . The chap there is very friendly and will offer to show you around as well as show a video in english of his production techniques!
The oil is very nice as well.

If you want oil from your own olives you will need to provide a minimum of 300 kgs.  The El Perello mill might accept 200+ but will charge you for 300.  You need to get the olives to the mill by the evening of the second day or first thing on the third day - giving you about 2 working days to harvest.  Acidity and quality suffer after this time.  Best to store your pickings flat on tarps overnight to avoid them heating up and you'll get loads of maggots wiggling out - but they're just extra protein  (tough luck to the veggies !)  Do NOT store them in plastic bags.  Make sure you have an appointed delivery time with the mill before you start your harvest or you might get squeezed out by the locals/regulars.  Expect to pay 60 to 80 euros for a 300 kg press and arrange whether you provide containers or buy them from the  mill at their price.  We hv a huge crop at the moment but won't get tempted to get our own oil.  We'll sell the olives and buy the oil we need from different areas/countries/brands.  Hope this helps.

Where is the best place to buy your plastic containers and how much do they run to?

Hi ebrovoice,

The friendly chap in El Perello's oli de moli is Thomas and yes, you can just pop in as a tourist as long as you don't do that when it is harvest time. His English is charming but it doesn't matter, he rapidly goes on in Spanish and pretend you understand everything he said ;-)
