Title: gas fridges
Post by john_and_angela on Jul 2nd, 2007 at 9:09pm
Hi everyone
We were just wondering what your opinion is on gas fridges?
We aren't sure whether to buy a gas or electric fridge. We have been told the gas one doesn't keep ice cream frozen. We will have a generator and solar panels eventually.
What is your experience with the gas fridges?

Angela and John,

We haven't started our renovation yet, but my calculations show that even a modern high efficiency electric fridge/freezer will suck about as much power as all the other combined electrical requirements for a small family house.

Gas fridges may be smaller and have embryonic freezers, but they keep the drinks cool effectively and use less than a bottle of gas per month.

It was mentioned recently on this forum,PB is dead right and I can back it up from personal experience.
Remember also that an electric fridge is on day and night and during the hot weather will be running more or less 24 hrs a day.The motor will be red hot and could be dangerous.Gas fridges are initially expensive but at 10 - 15 euros a month to run you'll soon recoup your cost.It should should keep ice cream solid,Mr Whippy sort of solid.

OK, so it's best to use a gas fridge - now where do we buy one?

Hello there
We bought our gas fridge last May when we were down in tortosa from Nigel at a much better price than we had seen elsewhere - and he came and delivered and installed it. The freezer sectiion, although small, easily kept icecream and made ice cubes in next to no time.  We're very happy with our purchase.
He has an advert on the home page of this site,
Regards, Haze and Alan

Sorry for the late reply but I disagree with the above.

We bought a full size Taver which uses a bottle a week in summer and a bottle every three weeks in the winter. We also bought an under counter Electrolux motorhome fridge which uses almost as much as the Taver. Neither were much good in high summer and threw a lot of heat into the kitchen.

I did some sums and bought a Neff A* energy rated fridge over form UK. It is fantastic and uses about 200 watt hours a day in high summer. Our small solar system makes about 1500 watt hours a day and with less use of other electrical appliances in summer its not a problem at all. It also saves you coming down in the morning to an empty gas bottle and a warm fridge.

The electrolux went back on eBay. Anyone want a Taver?
