Bit of useless information......the carat,unit of weight for gold and gemstones,was derived from the word carob.The Moorish traders used the bean as a standard recognised weight when trading around the mediterranean.I supposed it saved them from carrying those huge scales around.

This is true. They say each individual bean is exactly similar in weight to any other. I haven't tried this but why should I doubt perceived wisdom?

Its the seeds not the beans that are used as a weight...!!

There is the "bean" or "pod" and then inside are the seeds...if you look at the "article" there is a nice little diagram....with labels..!!

Now what did you go and put a link like that on for?
I have spent the whole afternoon looking at pictures of creepy crawlies instead of getting on with my work.
Mind you it doesn't take much for me to stop working, its starting again thats the hard bit
