Title: Now why did I leave the UK - know a good joke?
Post by Nigel on Nov 28th, 2008 at 11:55am
A Muslim student who used a text-a-gag service has spoken of his horror after it sent him racist jokes.

Kameron Abbas condemned the telephone inquiry service 118 118 for sending the bigoted jibes.

The 21-year-old tried out the question/answer text service with a friend "for a laugh".

He sent texts requesting "Asian" jokes, which cost 60p each, on his 20-year-old friend Imran Shah's phone.

A 118 118 spokesman said they do not keep a stock of Asian jokes and a rogue Filipino operator, based in Manila, responded by sending back the racist jokes.

Sky News Online has decided not to repeat the 'gags' but will reveal that one referred to an Asian having his head pushed under water.
Another suggested Asian people should "go home".

The telephone company has personally apologised to Mr Abbas, a student at Preston's University of Central Lancashire.

He told the Lancashire Evening Post: "I was horrified at what we received and couldn't believe that 118 118 would send anything like what they did. It was promoting racism."

Other reports said he is now considering legal action against the firm, which admitted a "breach of standards".

We couldn't believe the response. It was more Bernard Manning than Harry Hill. It was disgraceful and these people should be reported,
Kameron Abbas told reporters.

Mark Hendrick, Labour MP for Preston, said: "If they're letting stuff out like this, they need to clean up their act."

A 118 118 spokesman said: "118 118 has investigated the lapse and identified the employee that sent the text and has reprimanded the individual concerned.

"118 118 is also putting all its customer-facing employees through further training, and is reinforcing procedural actions to minimise the risk of such an incident recurring in the future."

We have jokes all the time about English,Irish,Scots,Jewish,Polish and most countries and most religions in the world in mainly good humoured ways, but for whatever reason, this does not seem to be appreciated by people of the Muslem society who feel offended and insulted if they are mentioned in a joke of any kind.My opinion for what it's worth is "chill-out" and have a laugh at yourselves, and the real world, integrate not separate(is that e or a there in that spelling??).

Old Nelson,

How brave you are to put this on the forum, I'm sure most people will agree with you.

I have a Jewish friend, living here in Spain, we meet up regulary and have a good laugh, although I must admit I really dont know anyone from the Muslim faith who I could do the same with, and yet there is a group of Pakistani's living in my village, but they are just men and work on the fields, there are no women in their family, which has actually raised eyebrows from other English people, because I have been told that Pakistani men dont live together without women, so whats the opinion on that.....if you know differnet please let me know......(REALLY DONT WANT A RACIST CARD ON THIS ONE, JUST A GOOD DISCUSSION)

I think things in the UK and other parts of Europe are getting way out of hand, and definitely too bigotted, just cast our minds back to before WWll, we cant let this happen.

Did'nt we all come here to escape this crap, and live in harmony together. This is a very interesting subject.

And what about us poor down trodden Brits....no more Bah bah black sheep in the classrooms just in case we upset our coloured brethren,no Red arrows flying at the london olympics just in case it offends all those who we have dealt out a severe slapping to in the many conflicts we've been involved in.Fortunately not many have cottoned on to us still being able to wind the French up by sticking the V's up  in memory of the longbow men at Agincourt.

But the Red Arrowa are flying at the London Olympics!  :) The fact is there was NEVER a ban on the Reds displaying at the 2012 Olympics. Both the Red Arrows and the 2012 websites have contained statements confirming this for well over a year   ::)

We don't have many muslims in our village as far as I know (although I must admit I don't know everyone's religious beliefs) but we did meet some very friendly and intelligent young muslim women when we were attending catalan classes in Tortosa.  Had some great conversations.

Surely there is good and bad in all races and religions?  I certainly can't abide religious fanatics of any description.

Re nursery Rhymes now they have banned the three little pigs as it may offend Muslims living in the UK and Newcastle Council for Education approved a new nursery Rhyme of the The Three Little cowboy Builders, to replace the three little pigs, the Eco Cowboy Builder built his house out of straw, The Coppice Cowboy Builder built his house out of Twigs, and the Master Mason Cowboy Builder built his house out of bricks, Blindfolded  with a bare breast and one trouser leg rolled up, but they all had their houses knocked down because they built them without any planning permission!!

How come the Jews are not offended ? as their religion classes the pig as a dirty animal, and I am sure there are more Jewish people living in the UK than Muslims!!

As you said most of the rest make fun and jokes about themselves, its only the ones who take themselves too seriously that I worry about

I take my lead from Nigel, anyway I'm not a big nose I'm a Quaker, as they accept every religion as opposed to objecting to everyone elses ;)

Hot Cross Buns One a penny two a penny, Now banned!!

IPSWICH, February 7, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The UK’s mania for political correctness has struck again where a school has banned hot cross buns, a traditional sweet pastry associated with Good Friday. A representative of Oaks Primary School in Ipswich, said the buns, which include two strips of decorative icing intersecting in the middle, might offend Jehovah’s Witnesses who attend the school.

Hot cross buns, a spicy currant or raisin studded yeast bun, topped with a "Cross" of lemon-flavored icing, have been a feature of English culture since the Middle Ages.

The Suffolk Evening Star reported that the head teacher of the school, Tina Jackson, asked the supplier to provide the buns without the crosses. “Obviously, the hot cross bun is a celebration of Easter but it is not Easter yet,” she told the paper. Jackson did not say whether she would expel students who chanted the traditional English nursery rhyme, “One a penny; two a penny; hot cross buns.”

The local pastor of the Jehovah’s Witness congregation applauded the school’s decision. “I can understand why the school has done this and I support the decision. Hot cross buns are a pagan symbol of fertility no different to bunnies, eggs and Easter. The Bible states we should not worship things of a pagan origin.”

No information was available about what sort of services the school had been planning to allow students to worship the buns or whether they had been cancelled. Moreover, the school did not say whether the buns would be inspected by the local Muslim or Catholic authorities for possible accidental appearances of religious figures in the patterns formed by the currants in the buns.

Now I know why I left the UK PC Gone Mad  ;D

At least in Spain they still celebrate their diverse and varied culture and History
