Title: Jeyes Fluid ?
Post by Bigyin on Aug 19th, 2009 at 6:03pm
Does anyone know if it's available over here.  I planted 92, 1 year old olive trees in March last year.  They've progressed well but this year, quite a few of them have suffered "die back".  I appear to have rescued some of them with pruning but others have died completly.  From what I can make out, the cause is verticillium wilt.  I need to re-plant about 20 new trees but don't want to risk infecting those as well so I want to sterilise the soil first.  Solarisation would seem to be the obvious answer but not really practical in 20 different spots.  The heat at the moment would do the job but of course there's no telling if it will last the couple of months it would take.  I reckon Jeyes would be easier.  I know there are some sorts of EU bans in place but thought that it may be available despite that.  Any other suggestions most welcome.
Cheers,
Bigyin
(And no, I'm not Scottish.  I'm 6' 4" and would have been 9' if I hadn't started smoking when I was seven)

Hi ,

We have some stuff that seems very similar to "jeyes" it is called  "Zotal" "G" , in a similar tin an smells rather like ! it says on the tin Desinfecttante, microbicida, fungicida, Y desodorizante so I guess it may be similar stuff €5.28 for 415c.c. tin from our local ferriteria.
Cheers

Thanks Steve.  I'll see if I can find anything about it on the net to compare ingredients.  Obviously have to make sure it won't leave harmful residues.

Just for your info Steve, I emailed Zotal about the suitability and here's what they came back with:-
Dear Sir,
"As you well said, Jeyes fluid is not sold in Spain. Our product Zotal is a formula very close in composition, but substituting the “natural phenols” present in Jeyes by “Synthetic Phenols”. The base is quite similar, and actually we know that our product is used to disinfect different items by quite a few farmers. Unfortunately, our product is not specifically registered to sterilise pottery and soil, being only approved to be used for the disinfection of surfaces and other items. Thus I cannot provide you with any accurate dosage to be used for the disinfection of soil. The product being similar, I guess the same dosage could be used, but I must inform you that we have no previous experience in disinfecting planting soil. Perhaps a preliminary test with several olives could be recommended?
Best regards,
Enrique Ruiz
R & D Manager
Laboratorios Zotal"
Very helpful I thought.  I haven't got time to do test planting so it'll probably have to be all or nothing.  Should be OK with fertiliser after planting to give the roots a good start.

When I used to have an allotment in england (God how old am I?) the old boy in the plot next to mine reccommended that the jeyes fluid was poyred in the planting hole 3 or 4 days before planting.
We used to use it against club root on cabbages.
It was very effective used as 1 part fluid 50 parts water applied with a fine rose watering can and give a thorough drenching in the hole and on the soil dug out which will go back in.
Hope this helps.
