You'd think with the money and budget he gets he'd use fresh produce. Some "old" chicken, some "old" veg and a few "old" herbs is quite frankly not good enough in this day and age.Fanny Craddock always used fresh stuff so why can't he.

What's wrong with being old? Old is good! Think mature cheese, vintage wine, Christmas Cake or pudding, Serano ham, salted cod, George Clooney, Old Nelson, etc. etc. they are all better with age !!!!

Quite agree.  Went to the Gisona nursery (by the canal at Campredo) yesterday.  Got 20 x onions, 6 lettuce (top up), 8 peppers, 2 courgette, 2 cucumber, 4 salad tom and two cherry.  €4.40 the lot.  She threw in some herbs for us to try.  Very helpful and friendly and healthy stock.

Bigyin, could you be a little bit more specific as to the whereabouts of this nursery.Wifey doesn´t like anything that's wilted, limp and seedless,I´m afraid.

There is one called Estorac that is near Campredo, very cheap - we paid 5cents for lettuice plants. Can't remember the rest of the prices but extremely cheap.

To get there:
From Tortosa head for L'Aldea. At the last roundabout (where there is a low building with a huge red brick chimney) take the 2nd exit (the 3rd is the dual carriage way) it has a big no entry sign which is a bit confusing as it isn't no entry. Keep going on this road, it follows the canal. You come to a 'Finca privada' sign and have to go right. At the end of that stretch you come to a T (it's not far) turn left.
Keep going until you will find 'Plantas Estorac', a big white building on the right hand side.

Nobrot.  Yes, Planters Estorach is the one.  Don't know which road Nigel's on ?  There's more than one way to get there but the most straightforward I've found is to go down the dual carriageway from the end of Generallitat towards L'Aldea.  The roundabout you're looking for has a big water tower by it and you can see a yellow tower with Roig painted on the side.  It's where you go for your ITV test.  Turn off the carriageway here and hang a right (Avenguda del Japo).  Go straight down until the last but one turning on the left.  There's a building with CADO in red on the side on the corner.  This takes you down into Campredo village.  Keep heading straight down (apart from a small kink).  Go as far down as you can until you get to the station and railway crossing.  Cross the railway and then the canal.  Turn right (hug the canal).  Estorach is just under 1K further on, on the left.  It's opposite some big sheds with rust colour painted roof and side panels.  There's a small car park in front and a smart looking shop front (white and green).  Nearer Tortosa is a place for great seed potatoes if anyone's interested.

Thanks Bigyin,I feel an expedition coming on...
Hazelnut,If you mean the almecen behing the bank in Bitem,it´s not what it seems. We used to go there for a few weeks but we were throwing at least half of what we bought(yes,it was very cheap and looked great,we were filling a supermarket trolley for €12 -15) away. The veg was lasting a couple of days at  most and a lot was going off there and then.False economy unless you are going every day.Hate to say it but the supermarkets have much better stock. There is a better one in Tivenys, when she´s open.

Is it just veg that they sell or do they do bedding plants as well ?

They have a selection of bedding plants and fruit trees but not that many. It may be pot luck if they have what you want but probably worth a try.

Just to clarify, it's a nursery that sells veg plants ready for planting out.  It's not a veg shop.  Only been a couple of times.  They have a vast array of plants behind the counter in a huge poly tunnel type structure.  They have a few flower plants in pots on the tables in front of the counter.  Best to visit and ask for what you're after.  Extremely helpful.

Went there today and as you say not a great selection as far as flowering plants are concerned but got some great veggies for just a few euros.  Very helpful getting out catalogues to show me the varieties available when I was not really sure what I required.
