In my experience it is cheaper to book in advance either through Ryanair or Easyjet sites. I have also been told that you can save money by shopping around and using other companies who will deliver the car to the airport! Would be interested to know how this works in practice and what happen s if your flight is late!!

Economy Car hire are only a broker, they use Solmar or Crown Auguira. When I booked through them with Crown ( In May) there was an extra charge for collecting the car "outside normal hours". I have never found any of the Easyjet / Ryanair offer cheaper that Economy or Somar-Online but might be worth a try

I have had results in the past from  http://www.holidayautos.co.uk

The major brands there, just discounted. Had off season cars for 150pw when the other people in the queue who went direct were paying 300 or 400.

I've used doyouspain many times in the past and have found them great.  Usually you end up getting the cars from either solmar, auriga crown and more recently goldcars.  Didn't have any problems in the past.  One advantage is that you don't have to pay up front - only on the day you get the car.  Last summer, I couldn't get a car in reus as they were all booked up - I booked in plenty of time this summer with doyouspain - car from goldcar..........Hopefully when I get there.

The nearest Halifax is in Barcelona but they dont work with the English branch. I went to Barce with a friend and they wouldnt let here take money out they needed 4 days notice. Whereby she would have been back home.

Dear Skiptonian -do you not have any services, insurances or taxes to pay direct from your Spanish accounts as they won't normally accept a British bank ?

well !! I used my account to buy the donkey shed, and to make it legal ,this was 6 years ago and have never needed it since ( does head burried in a bucket of sand sound correct !) anyway the account is just costing me money.
Thanks again

Next time you are back in the UK, open up a Nationwide Flexaccount. Best banking move that I ever made. When drawing out cash here I get the top exchange rate with no other charges. Eg. I drew €100 on Nationwide and got €1.212 and then drew €100 on Barclays Connect and got €1.046! Also when making online payments to non Nationwide accounts the money goes through immediately, no waiting for 4 working days.

Hi Pete
Yes got the Nationwide card , and also the FairFX for Ryanair,Good old Martin Lewis.
Nigel why not open a new section Money Saving !!!
Also on the Nationwide card ,used it the other day to book car hire and fee for using card  was £3.00 by chance swapped over to Barclays connect card,   no charge ,shows you you have to be on the ball.

Used Goldcar during or last visit, flew into El Prat, picked up by Goldcar and taken to offices, prompt service, English speaking. When we returned no fuss drop in the keys, wait for transport to T2 no problems we thought it good value for money. We will try them when we fly into Reus.

We used pepe cars at ElPrat again picked up at airport  in Feb this year, no problems, wife had read a few bad reviews ,charging for cleaning etc.. but as long as you spend a few Euros giving it a wash and vac to get the finca track dust of " yes have read the no unsurfaced road clause" as good as new, they were the cheapest and  got a good new desel C4 for a week for £70.00 inc extra cover will use again.
only thing would to mention is set your GPS so you can get back  to drop of office saves getting lost in the back streets round the airport. ;D

Have always booked through Carjet.co.uk or doyouspain.com and have had good experiences with both over the years.Lately I've booked direct with goldcar and have found that if you book direct you have a better chance of getting the car you booked or a free upgrade, almost always when booking through an agent I've gotten an older, smaller model especially in low season.Anyone else notice this or am I just imagining it ?

Hi Pete. ;) regarding Nationwide flexi acount. i have been using mine here, for almost 4 years to draw money out FOC. However since Nov 2010 they have introduced a charge, and i now have to pay 6 pounds each time I withdraw 300 euros. If they are not charging you, I will hot foot it to my English branch of nationwide when I go over next week, and ask for a refund. At the moment i am using my Natiowide credit card to make purchases where i can, and paying t off straight away on line. They are not making a charge for using this in Europe until July. Anyone know of another bank that still allows free withdrawls in Europe.  [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif] [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]

Yeh, the Nationwide charges are a nuisance but they're still cheaper than other Visa cards I have and much cheaper than the 'Charge in GBP' which keeps being offered at ATMs or card machines in shops.
If anyone knows better then please let us know!!
