Title: Watching BBC iPlayer
Post by PlanesPete on Oct 31st, 2010 at 9:42am
Just found a solution to watching iPlayer over here. www.tellyabroad.com seems to do the trick. Works very well and in high definition over my 1MB Iberbanda connection. Also does other replay services. They do a 3 day trial and then it's $30 a year (yes dollars!). Checked it for 'malware' and it looks clean.  :)

We have found a free one called Expat Shield, and it seems to work better than Telly Abroad.
Maybe give it a try?

Just downloaded the Expat Shield thingy and it works fine, but doesn't improve the quality of the tv programmes though. Hey but at least I wont miss 'strictly and x factor'....or will I????? :D
Incidently mcAfee says that the expat download is absolutely fine :)

Beware the Ex Pat Sheild, it does in fact enable you to watch BBC iPlayer but, when I tried uploading some photos to Facebook and Yahoo mail it failed also couldn't get into photobucket , the task bar overrides your normal search engine and suggests hacking sites to steal peoples identity, so I have uninstalled it from my computer!!

Nothing in Life is free!!

Expat Shield works well performance wise. Sadly it repeatedly tries to install a trojan virus and seems to be part of a botnet setup to get your PC to send spam.

Thanks for that Pete I knew there was something funny about the software!!

Last night I kept on getting porn coming up whilst using expat shield. Also i could not use my trading platform for work, so now its been uninstalled.
I will never now know who wins X factor, please dont bother telling me.
ps it was very good porn ;)

I had trouble with expat shield too! I did enjoy the new series of Top Gear (so far) but not all the porn ads that kept popping up.

A tip might be to use google chrome as a web browser as you can keep expat shield in one tab and not affect other tabs (windows) which you have open - this seems to work well for me!

Hi all,
My small Family and I have just moved to Tortosa from Kent in the UK and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone.

I saw this thread that was started a year ago and wondered if the tellyabroad website has proved to work safe and well?

Any advice on getting access to the BBC I-Player etc would be appreciated!

Thanks guys!  8-)

I've moved over to 'my-private-network' which costs Ł5 per month. Been using it for about 6 months now and its very good, no ads or malware. https://www.my-private-network.co.uk/

Title: Re: Watching BBC iPlayer

Its quite easy really....you give them 5 quid and they take all your passwords and bank details whilst you are watching repeats of Eastenders ( or in your case Coronation Street)
not forgetting Antiques Roadshow series 1 to 83365471.
I personnally don't have the time to watch uk telly as apparently I am always upside-down in a wheelie bin. Revenge will be sweet Nobby, Ritababy and Tony  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Nobrot, it's called a VPN. It gives you a link from here to their servers in the UK. They than pass on the data as if it's coming from them.  BBC then think it's a UK viewer. It's easy enough to setup and you should end up with an icon on your desktop. Click that and it logs you in. Then you can run iPlayer etc.

Many thanks for your advice on this PlanesPete, much appreciated!
I was also wondering if anyone has actually purchased a sat dish to receive all English TV? I guess this would be pretty expensive?

Ask Nigel about this.  Not complicated and not too expensive.

Thanks Bigyin, I will check with Nigel.

BBC TV is easy to access if someone is outside UK and using UK VPN for IP so they can access. UK IP will allow all users to access BBC from any where in the world. 8-)

Bigyin and all other android box fans try this new build fantastic art work and every film sports and tv channels and most work. Martian is on there it is not in the UK yet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6InFHrVYVM

The video is a little fast and the music not to everybodies taste but it give you an idea of the build contents it's fantastic.Takes 5 minutes to install. For a slower insite just type Premium lite build in youtube and you will see lots of videos which will show you it in action. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Tunnelbear imo is the best vpn coct 5 euros a month. And you can use that one payment to put the app on all your devices not just 1 laptop. You can try it for free the site is below.Go down to the bottom of the page to downoad the software.

Bunter,
Thanks for your valuable input as usual.  The original poster to this thread was referring to "catchup" TV.  I don't know if there is some confusion regarding the difference between this (iplayer etc. which needs a VPN) and systems based on Kodi (which do not).
"Bigyin and all other android box fans try this new build fantastic art work and every film sports and tv channels and most work. Martian is on there it is not in the UK yet."
I don't actually own an Android box.  I have a spare PC connected to my TV and use FilmonHDIplayer for live TV (UK channels but many others available) and TVaddons (another customised and preconfigured version of Kodi) for films and older TV progs and series which are no longer available on catchup.  I'm not interested in watching TV on "devices".
My point is that none of the above require any subscriptions.
It's not perfect in terms of occasional buffering etc. but I'm not sure if this is down to my limited (3Mb) bandwidth or choking at the server ends.  We can discuss this further if you're interested.

I am using the Hola extension on Firefox and have had no problems with it.
I also use live.camposat.tv and have no problems with that.  I don't think I need to buy any builds or boxes as I don't miss U.K. tv enough to want to pay for it.
I don't pay for a tv license in the U.K. as I don't watch live tv, catch up works fine. There are a lot of people funding the BBC and it's crazy salaries through the license fee, I don't agree with it and the law states you only need a license to watch live tv,ie, as it is being broadcast. The independents self fund. (Rant over) 8-)

Ohhhhh Holo not sure I would go back to using that... :o

Although most users probably do not realize it, Hola works much like Tor. Every user of Hola also acts as a potential exit node for every other Hola user,

‘When a user installs Hola, he becomes a VPN endpoint, and other users of the Hola network may exit through his internet connection and take on his IP. This is what makes it free: Hola does not pay for the bandwidth that its VPN uses at all, and there is no user opt out for this.’

This is likely to be something many users will be very uncomfortable with, and exposes them to the same kinds of risks that a Tor exit node user is vulnerable to. Because the apparent IP address of any Hola user is the IP address of another user, that user can be held responsible for the actions (criminal, hacking, DDoS attacks etc.) of users. As Brennan observes,

‘On the other hand, with the Tor onion router, users must specifically opt in to be exit nodes and are aware that completely anonymous traffic can pass through their connections, which means they should be ready for abuse reports for child porn, spam, copyrighted content and other ills that come with the territory.’

Co-founder of Hola, Ofer Vilenski, has defended this setup. He explained that Hola has never hidden how the service works,

‘We have always made it clear that Hola is built for the user and with the user in mind. We’ve explained the technical aspects of it in our FAQ and have always advertised in our FAQ the ability to pay for non-commercial use.’

However… what was never made clear (until its FAQ was quickly updated last Wednesday as news spread of Brennan’s findings), is that Hola sells its users’ bandwidth through its sister company, Luminati

This is fascinating Bunter, where do you get this info from?  I have been using Hola for a donkeys age and was not at all aware of this.  Can I work my way around the piggy-backing at all? :(

I've taken the plunge.  Tried the free 1.5Gb and have now purchased a 1 month sub to see how it goes.
Previously I was having trouble even getting on to the iplayer home page as something was immediately diverting me off to bbc.com.  Similar with the TV Times web site.  Tunnelbear has overcome that which in it's own right is a bonus.  Haven't had time to test if the allocated bandwidth has improved.
I've downloaded a second copy onto my office PC and find that it's preventing connection to my email pop3 servers.  Do you know if this is to do with one of the preferences i.e. "Vigilant" or TCP Overide" ?

if you want your vigilant off, immediately your system comes on and tunnel bear starts running,Go to settings and you should be able to turn it off

How is vigilant helpful?

It’s a fact of life, WiFi connections drop. Maybe you are in a cafe, or moving from location to location or maybe just opened your laptop. When it happens, TunnelBear automatically reconnects as soon as you have internet again; but in the brief seconds while TunnelBear is reconnecting, you’ll be using the internet without your furry protector.

Vigilant helps to protect you by blocking any unsecured traffic while TunnelBear is connecting.
vigilant
How do I use vigilant?

You can turn vigilant on from the “General” section of the preferences menu. When it’s turned on, TunnelBear will make sure that no insecure data goes in or out of your computer while you’re connecting to their network.

Vigilant joins intelliBear, maul trackers and closest tunnel as another tool for you to keep your location and browsing activities private while using the internet.

Just untick the boxes and see if it works for your pop3. I have emailed tunnelbear and they should give more info. I will pass it on when I hear. Grrrrrrrrrrr

That was very good of you Bunter to take the trouble.
I disabled Vigilant and the TCP thingy but no change.  I deleted the bear and then reinstalled it.
In the meantime I've been having power outages and lost internet.  When I got it back a clever young friend of mine used cmd.tracert 4.4.4.4 which reopened my ports and all now good.
Thanks again.
