Title: lap top
Post by robo on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 10:18am
we are coming over in 3 weeks time i am hoping to bring a laptop so we have something to do of an evening is it possible to use an english internet dongle in spain, it may seem a daft question but as we are not over in spain permanent i do not want the expense of a 12 month contract

You can use an English dongle here but beware of the charges. One of my customers was being charged £7.50 per day + data charges for using his UK dongle here.

You can get a permanent non-contract internet connection from Eurona - you only pay for it while you are here - flat rate 12 euros + IVA per month, 1Mb speed and unlimited use.

you may want to download EX PAT SHIELD before you come so you can see UK TV and radio.

There are also many free wifi hotspots at Cafes/Hotels/Local Town Hall,  You can use so you can have a beer/coffee and compute  ::)

I bought an unlocked dongle of ebay and a pay as you go Spanish vodaphone  3g data sim card of ebay too. The Sim card was £12.95 with 10 Euros credit and free postage from Spain.

The guy selling the sim cards has a website: www-simcardspain-es
That is his username on ebay too. I've had no problems with this. He has some on ebay at the moment - Item number: 220901043061

There is also a Vodaphone shop on the main drag in Tortosa where you can top your card up. Or you can do it online. If you try to buy a sim in Spain, be prepared for the usual Beurocratic crap needing passports, Nie etc.

I bought mine from this guy and avoided all of it.

Hope this helps.

Hi Smidge,
I'm afraid I don't know the answer to this. I've heard of skype but never used it. I know nothing about it other than it's something to do with free internet calls.
John.

Hi John.
You should look up Skype it can save you a lot of money. I sometimes spend an hour or more talking to and seeing my family on the other side of the world  free of charge.

Nigel, is the non resident internet connection from Eurona @ 12 Euro a month via a mobile dongle or via a specific connection to the house ?

It's an installation in the house, not a dongle.  There is also the option of having a telephone service with it, again on a non-contract basis.

Hi we bought a dongle for our laptop in Carrefour - it was 29 euros I think. It costs one euro per day - we have found lit very good! We tried Orange but it was 3.50 per day!

You only pay for one day at a time and the top up lasts 3 months. You top it up like a mobile phone. It's perfect for us and for those who are only out for a week or two at a time. Your time runs from midnight to midnight.

There is a Carrefour in Amposta and one in Tarragona. We got ours in Tarragona at the mobile phone desk. We don't have great reception so we haven't tried Skype- its great for emails and browsing the Internet though.

Hi I have just been given a dongle on the Vodafone pay as you go contract from a friend at work, anyone use vodafone dongles in the area if so what,s signal strength like ? he has just today got a new one from the car phone warehouse for £19.00 and this included £15.00 in credit !!!! and I was always under the illusion that that it would far too expensive for me to go down this route :D

Here's an alternative. I use an HTC mobile phone with a Simyo SIM card. This gives me my phone calls at a really cheap rate and 650Gig of data each month. You just have to use €7 a month on calls. There are other options available. The HTC phone acts as a wireless router so we can all use our laptops at the same time. If the signal is strong, and it usually is then we get about 2Mb speed which is lower broadband speeds. It's great if you travel around and want internet anywhere.

I have the same problem, it is a lot to pay for 12 months for only 3 months use, but what is the alternative when we do not have any internet service where we are, other than satelite service.

Post by robo on Mar 30th, 2012 at 12:24pm
i decided 3.5 euros a day for the 02 dongle was a bit to dear i worked but not great so i decided to get one from carrefours at 1 euro a day as it runs on the back of 02 i did not think i would have a problem, after 4 days of use i have just about had enough of it 2 empty bean cans and a piece of string would work far better , it starts of slow then slows down you can fall asleep waiting for things to down load, there must be an answer with out getting into paying when i am back in england, i do not mind paying 30 to 40 euros a month when i am here
