I see they are starting the works of clearing the Flix reservoir of 700,000 tons of toxic sludge this friday amongst great opposition from village mayors from the lower reaches of the ebro all the way down to Tortosa , these works will last 2 years and if there is accident or inccident it could affect 1 million people and /or infect over 50,000 hectares of irrigated crops..... i share their concerns.
But they have been sitting on this for years and it needs to be cleared up , i just hope the safeguards are 100%.
This project is costing 165 million euros and is 70% funded by the european union and is the biggest envriomental project in europe at this time.

So where is the 'sludge' going to end up.

Yes this is a big one. Potentially very dangerous. Studies of birds feeding in the area have revealed the highest mercury levels ever recorded in the world. >:(

As far as i understand the sludge is to be extracted,treated and dried and put in landfill a few klix from the town, heavy metals to be encased in concrete . It sounds horrific, and makes Asco nuclear look like a pussy cat in comparison .
