Since that time there have been warnings to visitors, to not only have an EHIC card, when visiting Spain, but take out some private travel insurance aswell.
Also people should make sure that they are not taken to or admitted to a PRIVATE hospital, otherwise they will have to pay the costs themselves.
I don't know if it still applies, but as residents here we were given special papers, from Cat Salut that we were told to always carry with us, and when outside Catalunya, would allow us to receive hospital treatment in other parts of Spain, if we produced them.
I would be interested if this still applies here, if anyone knows, Please.
