Is anyone growing comfrey or knows where to get comfrey plants?

We had two roots.  One has died so don't look to us for ongoing stocks, it's Bocking 14 but hanging on for dear life.  How do you know about comfrey?

Known about the various uses of comfrey (also known as 'knitbone' by herbalists) for decades though never actually used it for compost - which is what I want to grow it for now; although not sure how well it will grow here. Where did you get your Bocking 14 from (Spain or UK)?

I have grown it reasonably successfully here - it needs a lot of water!!

I make a compost tea out of it and manage to get two harvests a year. It is dying back now and I will be transplanting it in the spring.


I originally grew it from seed (from the UK) and it takes a fair while to germinate, but gets there in the end. I also sowed some self-seeding from the USA, but whilst it has come up quite nicely, there is no evidence that it is producing fertile seeds.

Here at the shack on the hill obtained our comfrey plant on a dark day from a kind man wearing a trenchcoat and funny hat who said our plant was Russian comfrey and we planted it in a large black bucket with the bottom taken out straight into the ground as it helps to keep the water to the roots so as not to waste the water. The bucket also stops it from moving towards Germany and Poland as everything with that nation tends to do!!!!!

If you want a green manure for harvesting or digging in, Alfalfa is easy to get here.

I plant a lot of lentils just for green manure as well. Just hoe them in and it provides a lot of nitrogen.

Were can you buy this from??..nowhere local seems to have it.

I think you can get it at the co-operatives as it's fed to horses.  I'll check with my neighbor and get back to you.

Sol debre sells both alfalfa seeds and bales of dried alfalfa

I'm pretty sure the co-op shop in Amposta sells both as well.  I've asked my neighbor to check if the seeds are viable when she goes to buy horse feed on Saturday.  I'm pretty sure they are though as I've had Alfalfa sprouting from ground into which I've incorporated manure from her horses.  I have a feeling that the co-ops also sell various green manure seeds in packets.  The lads at Sol D'Ebre are very helpful.  Please us know how you get on.
