Title: UK TV The cheap alternative..
Post by AndyJulie on Feb 14th, 2014 at 6:58pm
By now many of you will have discovered "filmon" Free for all bbc, itv etc.  Then all you need is a cable to connect your pc, laptop or phone to your tele. You can also upgrade and receive it in hd.ll
If you find that your signal breaks up it will probably because of slow broadband speeds.  Try ebrecom only 20€ a month inc iva for 20mb. I was paying 29€ for 1mb. Picture quality is now good and the picture does not break up. They do charge 150 to 200€ for installation.
These are  easily found with a google search.

Sounds good, but is this coming through the Inet, if so will it not suffer from problems as Nigel has said?

This is a fairly new young company that break their back to help. Locally, before instalation two friends had problems getting a good signal and a new antenna was installed just for them. I do not think their is a upload/download limit.

Yes - it is WiMax and it comes via the internet. It may not have problems today or tomorrow but may do at some time in the future.

What do I base this on?

At Christmas I spoke to a company that provides an IPTV service and also have their own WiMax network based near Torrevieja. They have been in business quite a few years so have lots of experience.

The transmitters in the towers (the ones everyone connects to) are referred to as 'Panels'. On a typical WiMax network anything from 40 to 100+ users will connect via a single panel as they share channels and bandwidth. The company in Torrevieja will not allow more than 8 IPTV users to be connected to a single panel as they have had problems with breakup when connecting more users.

So today no, tomorrow maybe not, but when you start overloading the system then yes. WiMax is WiMax be it Iberbanda, Eurona, Ebrecom or another company. This capacity problem does not affect ADSL which is why I will only supply IPTV services to ADSL users.

Hello all, just a note from Vinaros. I was on Wimax.
I was not that good
The company I was with transferred me to another company (Langur). They have changed the antenna for a Routerboard sxt 5nd which is I believe one end of a 5Ghz point to point radio link. So far so good with streaming TV from Filmon.

It's still WiMax just another company, maybe with more up to date equipment.

Any radio link that provides internet is WiMax. There are differences in equipment but at the end of the day it's still the same.

The one major difference between operators is if they operate in 'banda libre' - unlicenced bandwidth or 'banda licencada' licenced bandwidth.

What difference does this make? A lot.
Any operator has the right to set up a network in unlicenced bandwidth and not worry about causing problems to other users of this part of the spectrum - think interference, connections that don't work, poor quality transmitters that cause problems to other operators. These are all things that happened to Eurona a few years ago around Tortosa which is somewhat saturated with operators. There are only a certain number of available frequencies in the unlicenced bandwidth part of the spectrum. The operators have no redress.

An operator that operates in licenced bandwidth has guaranteed exclusivity to use the band they are allocated. They pay a licence to use the frequencies and should any operator cause interference they can be shut down. The spectrum is policed by the equivalent to the 'Radio Association' in the UK. Following the problems experienced by Eurona around Tortosa they moved to this and their problems noted above have gone away.

We have been using Iplayers quite successfully but watching TV live can be a problem, the whirly thing happens too much so that parts of the programme is missed.  So Nigel considering what you have said about band widths , do you feel it best for us to stick to Eurona?

Hi Pat

I had 1 mb speed with iberbanda and rang them up and now have 3 mb for slightly less money. I use the ipad and apple tv for live TV from UK I also have it on my kindle for watching live Tv but mostly radio 4 extra all the bedtime stories read to you whilst you drop off.. On apple TV I have changed the DNS settings to get netflix USA and there is no "Buffering" or whirly thing as you put it,All the films play if they are filmed in,Full HD.On netflix you can get all the old favs (complete series) like Campion,Morse,Endeavour,Midsummer Murders Marple etc.....Sorry my wife likes that sort of thing. For live TV we use tunnelbear VPN to change our location to the UK. For less than 4 euros a month you can use it on one pc and two devices ie your pc, ipad, and kindle fire. So we do not have to have the computer on when watching BBC1 etc. Just mirror it to the tv with the ipad.Three devices for 4 euros a month aint bad (price of three coffees) You can also have all the catch TV apps on your ipad and play them to your TV. Not all can afford a thousand Euro or thereabouts for something that's out of sight out of mind like a dish.(On the roof)You have the cost of the ipad but once you start using it you see all the uses to can bring you apart from TV and it's transportable and small/light plus you can play candy crush saga all day.  ;D

Thanks Bunter for your extensive reply.  We get 3mb  with Eurona & I use uktvaccess.com to see tv both live & iplayers , is that the same sort of service as tunnelbear, is one better than the other?  I haven't got an ipad yet, which make would be best?  At present we use a cable to connect the laptop to the tv, what do you mean by 'mirroring'? ::)

I know Nigel has explained that we could have a big slow down if all the people wanted to watch UK TV at the moment there are not a lot of EEEEEENglish near me and the mast I use but I must say its not my field so I shall wait and enjoy whilst I can. I have never had a problem with TunnelBear in the 7 months I have used it. You can use it for free on a 500mg download limit but it gives you an idea of how it works and if its for you. You can buy an apple TV 2 which has been hacked and this has all films sport etc with nothing else to pay. Apple TV3 then one I have has not been hacked yet but they are working on it. What that means is at the moment I can only use apple and can not add to my list of on screen apps. When its hacked or the correct term "Jailbroken " Same thing, You can add all your catch up players bla bla and free films etc. Have a look in Ebay The item I have added a link for below is one of the good guys he is very contactable re upgrades problems etc.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Apple-TV2-Untethered-Jailbroken-JUST-the-same-as-the-ones-being-sold-at-289-/111181670476?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Internet_TV_Media_Streamers&hash=item19e2f1a84c

IPAD for sale.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IPad-4-32GB-Wifi-3G4G-/131119133861?pt=UK_iPad_Tablets_eReaders&hash=item1e874f34a5

With regards mirroring We have an Ipad4 not the very latest but good enough for us. What happens is you go to settings on the ipad put you VPN on to UK and then go to the front page of the ipad , swipe up the screen with your finger or a ipad pen ( 1.99 from Chinese shop) and the air screen will show with a link to your apple TV they then connect no wires required, And when you open BBC iplayer or filmon or whatever on your ipad it will play on your big telly. Seems a big expense we already had the bits and bobs before the channel loss I was just sharing how we now get by if we need to watch BBC or ITV etc. We have Sky which I still pay for but I missed the radio 4 extra which also went but we now have it back using the methods described.

My solution if it helps anybody great but its working for me.
Im on eurona and am limited to 10gb per month download no use for streaming.
I upgraded to the L package which gives me 20gb per month between the hours of 7am and 11pm but unlimited between 11pm and 7am.
I now record all my TV off filmon then download it automatically after 11pm to watch when i want. I now have more channels and catch up TV when i want. I use a samsung galaxy tab which holds the recordings which then streams the recordings to my TV via wifi and an app called i media and the 20gb allows me to watch things live if i miss the recording via the tv guide.

Here is a site that goes a little way to explaining all about the various VPN services and how they work.

Pat, you're not on satellite you're on WiMax. You don't have download limits. The 'L'package is part of the Satellite service.

Gosh.........this thread has been going on for ages, what I dont understand is why it is so important to have UK television.

I've lived here for 10 years, ever had satellite UK TV and quite honestly dont want it.

It's full of doom and gloom and soap operas.

There are so many things to do here, and watch decent films on DVD if needed, but UK TV for me .........you can shove it!!!!!!

Sorry.

Hi jools, we've been here for seven years and have never had UK TV either.  When we moved into our new house a year ago we tried having a satellite dish but gave up because it is too windy here.  If we want to see anything from BBC we use i-Player and download whatever we want to watch later, but it isn't much tbh.  We were thinking of investing in a big dish but it really isn't worth it.  Like you say there's very little worth watching.

jools  and  pondgirl if you  have  chosen not to watch uk tv then thats up to you .but for people that want to watch it thats up to them too.all we are trying to do is come up with a way of watching the uk tv programs we like to watch without it costing so much money our 1.2m dish cost us 90e to buy a few years ago but now as we need a BIGGER dish the prices seem to have gone mad around 700e for a 1.8m dish and 1500e for a 2.2m dish maybe if we all wait a few months the prices will come down  ::) ::) ::)

Cheaper Dish....... 450 Euro all in. May not be suitable in high winds and not as good quality as the "Nige" dish but if your sheltered it may work for you ????

nen, I'm not suggesting people shouldn't watch  UK TV but I'm not sure how it can be done without costing 'too much money' when it costs a fortune in the UK to begin with.  A licence is about £140 a year and a Sky package of 'entertainment' and sport will set you back another £450-£500 a year.  You can get a lot of broadband for that but you cannot legally access any of it over here as far as I know.

I would happily offer to pay the UK licence in order to access the Beeb but unfortunately it isn't available so we resort to a proxy server to access the few programmes that we do like.  Does anyone know of a legal to do any of this?

Doubtful. They have gone up 25 euros in the last year and there is now no demand around Alicante.

Don't forget transport costs when looking at prices. I just paid nearly 400 euros for delivery of the dishes I ordered. If you do a trip to Benidorm or Alicante to pick up your own dish you will be paying 100 euros + in fuel and tolls. Courier is possible; the supplier I use was quoted 500 euros for delivery of a 1.9M dish to Barcelona a year ago - rather excessive!

You can record as well.   :o

Will not come in until 2017 and will be unenforceable. Good old data protection act. Just thought you would like a read about the thinking at the BBC. They would save millions per year if they closed all their expense accounts. These people at the BBC make MPs fiddling small fry.  :-X

I spoke to Britsat about this - it is a dish they sold 10 years ago but was useless so they stopped selling them. They were paper thin and didn't work. They have now removed the page.
