Title: Why is the sea so low?
Post by coldalba on Apr 1st, 2015 at 4:46pm
The last month or so the sea level near L'Ampolla has been about 2'6" below what it was in December (when it was high).
Even after all the rains it is still low.
I had been told that it varied with air pressure and it is quite high now (1020 ish) but that is not So high compared with summer pressures when the sea is (or at least was) a good 18" higher than it is now.
Does anyone Know what factors effect the level of the Med.?

A good guess is the moon. On Friday is is the first full moon after the spring Equinox. Thed moon has a great effect on the tides

There is a low and high tide in the med not as big as we have in england but it still makes a difference

Rainfall has no effect on sea level.

Thanks all but it is not the moon or tide as it has been consistently low for well over a month (moon is a 28 day cycle, tides twice a day).
Any other ideas?

There is a negligible tidal effect in the Med but the noticeable rise and fall is due only to air pressure.
