Title: chemicals in septic tanks
Post by Paula on Dec 2nd, 2015 at 6:26pm
hi

has anyone else noticed that the forum has aged 2 years in a week!:)

a quickie about septic tank usage……

are there any toilet/kitchen cleaners that one should avoid using?

Bleach should be avoided, also coloured toilet paper.
There are special sachets that you can buy to put down the toilet, about once a week, for septic tank usage.
Most supermarkets sell them. Bit pricey though.

thanks

good job I only use white TP then:) should one be cautious of how much TP is flushed?

& are the toilet wet wipes OK to use, I know one has to avoid sanitary items, I was wondering if it included this?

If you had a baby in the house and were constantly using wet wipes all the time it would not be advisable.
One maker of the sachets which are for septic tanks mentioned before are,
WC Net, foscas septicas.
For only two people, you only need to use one capsule every ten days or so?

Hello
Don't put wet wipes down the loo as they don't disintegrate. I believe most are made of cloth fibres. Only put paper down. The colour doesn't matter, but white is usually cheaper. Newspaper even cheaper (if you have read it first)
The sachets to keep the septic alive are called 'Activador Biologico Fosas Septicas Bolsitas soluables' .
Don't go mad with the bleach. A bit wont harm the tank

I think the bleach in a yellow bottle with a rabbit on it is OK if used sparingly.

Most is common sense and remember those plumbers are expensive at the weekend they charge time and a turd.  :D :D :D

Hi, just going back to an earlier comment about the issue of when the tanks are not in use with this monthly treatment, no one responded....

Hi Paula,
I'm not an expert on this subject but for what it's worth, here is my experience with septic tanks.
When I moved into my property just over 10 years ago, the tank hadn't been in use for a couple of years.  There was no evidence that it had "dried out" and it functioned as expected.
Both our toilets (only one used 99.9% of the time), the shower and kitchen sink drain into it.  There are two people living in the house and maybe there is an ideal relationship between the size of the tank and the volume of waste water that discharges into it.  I only use a couple of the locally obtainable sachets very occasionally if I detect any trace of odor. I don't think it's something you need to be too concerned about.

I got mine via the above website free postage and quick delivery. The packet has a seal top and a monthly calendar on the back to tick off when you treat the loo. You just drop it into the nearest loo to the tank and let it do its work. The company seem to know what they are doing so will give the product a try.  ;)

You can restart the septic tank process by using 2 x nbs sprang sachets and then one every month. The tank shouldn't be allowed to dry out though.
