Title: Car insurance
Post by nilly_bear on Jul 18th, 2016 at 2:56pm
As my car is broken down ,I thought as it is parked on
Private land ,I could cancel my insurance whilst it's off the road,
(Repair bill is like a crazy money.)my runs out end of July 2016,
WRONG.
So I have now renewed it for the below reasons.
Having discussed this with an insurance agent i
Find that the law in Spain is the car MUST at all times be insured
Wether on the road or not , running or broken down.
And on private land or otherwise
BUT,!!!!!!
Traffico are now apparently checking up on all vehicles
And if I heard correctly issuing a 1900 euro fine.!!!!!!
The only way I think is contact traffico and have the number
Plate suspended or ended, traffico issue you with a certain document not to sure which or insure the vehicle ,sell it ,tell the insurance company, passing on
The Document issued by traffico
and try to claim some money back pro rota.
I hope this of help to some and the information is fairly helpful.
Good luck :o

That isn't much different to UK law is it?  You have to sign a SORN (Satutory Off Road Notice) if you want to legally inform DVLA that your car is off the road.  It's to stop people driving uninsured which is a big problem.

Yes you are quite right in what you say pondgirl,
This applies to all  cars and ones not in use , just general sitting there gathering dust here in Spain.
But the problem will be for some  people who have a
Rural address or a Po box address or don't check their mail box on a regular basis that the fines are then
returned to traffico and resent , backwards  and forwards like a yo yo,
So these fines will go up and up ,
I suppose there are or will be checking on their computer base ,
Then send the fines out by registered post just an educated guess.

If you have an almacen then keep it locked away. They will not know one way or another.

We kept our Range rover in storage for 5 years before we got it matriculated and insured.

I persume this was British registered and paperwork stated ' exported' from the U.K.
So a different matter from Spanish registered vehicles?

But if the number plate is still active or in circulation if
That's the right term ,it won't make a blind difference
Where you keep it ,the vehicle  that is ,it's still on
Traffico data base
