We used diesel with great effect. We have bare wood pine beams which are well perforated with holes and we could see quire a few active ones with fresh sawdust appearing. By using an old kitchen spray bottle and a piece of cardboard as a shield, the job was done in no time. There were a few more active ones 3 years later and we re-sprayed. That second treatment was 5 years ago and no more signs of activity.
I would certainly treat again the same way if needed. The smell clears quickly and doesn't leave any noticeable colouring even with the red diesel we used.
