Catalunya clampdown on 'Boozy Tourists'

Authorities in Catalonia are planning a summer crackdown on rowdy visitors from northern Europe.

They are worried Barcelona and the Costa Brava resorts are gaining a reputation as "booze and babes" playgrounds.

The Independent says locals are fed up with noisy, all-night partying keeping them up and leaving the streets filthy with rubbish.

The region has become a favourite destination for hard-drinking stag and hen-night crowds and college graduation parties.

This is partly because authorities have long encouraged down-market mass tourism with low prices and a tolerant attitude.

However, officials have now drawn up several measures to stamp out what they call "uncivil" behaviour.

They are targeting unofficial websites for cheap Catalan resorts that promise wild street parties to those who use cheap flights.

"We can't allow our region to turn into a human rubbish tip for everyone not wanted by other European countries," Xavier Guitart, of the region's tourism ministry, said.

"We are not prepared to prostitute our region for 4 euros (£2.75)."

In addition, authorities have banned street vendors, skateboarders, jugglers, beggars and many other public acts.

Police will give out on the spot fines for those who break the rules.
