Could anyone tell me how to go about getting a license to use a boat on the river?

What documentation do i need?
Where do i go to apply?
What are the rules?
What are the costs?

or any other comments on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Does this also apply for the sea?
If the boat is on the SSR, do you need anything else? licence etc?

Someone has just been fined today with a jet ski, which is SSR, but he did not have a Spanish licence so was fined 600 euros.

Anyone know the rules?

Hi Nigel,
My first post.

As I understand things. If the boat is SSR and he has the correct  insurance and RYA qualifications, changed to ICC,s , he should be legal.
I'm not sure if there is a time limit for boats, like cars, where you have to matriculate.

In the past I've been in touch with the RYA legal Dept. About their qualifications not being accepted in Spain,(using them on a Spanish flagged vessel) but they were less than helpful.

There is some good info on the "Angloinfo" site, about boating in Spain can't remember were though, but a trawl should be fruitful.

What is ICC? Is the RYA qualification recognised in Spain?  I gather there is a RYA course in Alicante but if it's not recognised then there seems little point in doing it.

Thanks,

Nigel

p.s. this isn't for me it's for a friend of mine!

The ICC stands for International Certificate of Competence. It is issued by the RYA. In my case I had to send copies of my RYA qualifications to them with a passport photo.  The ICC lists (like a driving licence) what vessels it is valid for. It has a date of issue and an expiry date. On the back it says, "The holder of this document has successfully passed the tests necessary to demonstrate his/her competence to operate pleasure craft", and is translated into a number of languages.

I think the RYA qualifications are fine while you are on holiday, or you are non resident but when you become resident, you must hold Spanish qualifications for certain sizes/types of boat.

One day we  will be in the EU  Roll Eyes

If your friend is a member of the RYA, he could contact them?

It would be interesting to hear what the sailing school in Alicante has to say?

I was thinking of bringing my jetski  (now sold) with me to Spain, this is how I found out about the problems.

That settles it then I was going to buy a boat and bring it to Catalunya, NOW I will forget the idea!! Angry Angry

I wonder if any of the Spanish fishing boats that decimate the UK fishing stocks and ignore all the international set quotas have an ICC certificate, if they do then its about time the Royal Navy Stopped all of them and insisted they re sit an RYA certificate in English, and impounded their boats till they complied

Play the Spanish at their own game and ignore perfectly good qualifications

Apparantly to use an airbed/lilo in the sea you must have a puncture repair kit, a complete set of spare flippers
2 pairs of goggles and 2 bright yellow flourescent jackets. Not forgetting the 2 triangles to be placed on the sea bed 20metres in front of and 20 metres behind the airbed Grin Grin

You forgot that you have to have the airbed ITV'd and the air pressures checked,  a suitable life jacket, distress flares and not forgetting a suitable anchor and 3 metres of chain Grin Grin Grin

Hi Hazelnut,
The ICC's that the RYA issue are only for pleasure boat use.

Have a look at the Angloinfo site, Sailing & boating section. There is a fair bit of info there.

Sorry, lilo needs 10m of chain, offshore flares and VHF radio  Wink

Ahh yes Cactus I know Day skippers have hemp ropes, and night skippers have dayglow neon ropes for skipping in the dark, do you have arm bands with red and green lights on them plus a baseball cap with masthead and stern lights on, I can just see you with your new night skippers certificate skipping down the hill to the pub!!
