northlea, i totally understand where you are coming from,
catalunya has to be the most frustrating place to try and achieve anything, crazy rules and nonsense that nobody understands ! Undecided, everything takes forever to get done, such a shame in such a beautiful place , Sad
it all seems to have got worse in the last 5 yrs.

Well one thing is for sure The Catalans Don't like change!!

So the hope of anything getting better is highly unlikely

If it does change for the better ie less paperwork it will take years!!

Sorry but its a fact Angry

While I used to find it quite exciting having a place in west Cataloonya, now that it has turned into the Wild West and is virtually lawless, it has rapidly worn off.
Having had stuff stolen and property damaged by locals, one of them being English, and then finding that the English Speaking Police emergency line does not speak any English does not instill much faith in the system !
Perhaps it has allways been this way,but we did not notice it,until we were nearly mugged ?

I am just wondering how many UK police forces have a Catalan speaking phone line....learn the language.
Robberies of all kinds occur all over the world, not just Catalunya.
I personnally have never seen so many police as there are in the Tortosa region. In fact they even drove 2 miles up a dead end track to tell my neighbour Salvador that there was too much poo in his dog kennel and to clear it out. They even issued him with a ticket and a promise of a fine if it wasn't done by the following morning.
Now you don't get policing like that in England.

No but I bet in the UK they have some officer that speaks irdu hindi pakistani chinese latvian romanian and serbian Ohh and English of course, in fact if you lived in bradford you would probably have a separate english speaking number to ring!! Grin Grin Grin

Anyway cactus I don't think the UK police would have anything to do with a Dog kennel with too much poo in it, you would get a severe Bollocking for ringing the emergency number and be curtly  told to ring the RSPCA

So Are you telling me that there is a Catalan Law for too much poo cripes I could have a field day with our local Finca Owners Grin Grin Grin

The point is, that now Catalooonya is now a member of the EU and grabs with both hands as much subsidy money as it can,its pretty bad when they cannot even print a few leaflets with necessary information, such as when to pay the Rates etc.in a few other languages !

That's not gonna happen.  The English speakers are a really tiny minority.  I find my Bank Manager a really good source of info on matters admin.  I'm lucky as mine speaks good English but it's amazing what an invite for a coffee and a bun mid morning will do.

Hang on folks, I thought this was about 'northlea' !!
Northlea, whoever you are, going back to the UK is not the end of the world and could be a very good move, don't see it as a failing but as a positive step.
We came back 2 years ago and have never regretted it.
quote 'what do you have to go back to?'  A lot actually, family friends, your mother tongue, a decent free health system, free schooling, a social security system. We were surprised at how much help we got in all areas when we came back! We were skint ( having had to leave our home unsold in Spain) but after a few 'phone calls I established that we were entitled to tax credits whilst we got back on our feet. We have now re-established our business here and it is going really well, despite the credit crunch we have never been busier, yes, we both have to work our arses off and work long hours but we are seeing results and always say what a good move we made. It was hard and we felt uprooted at first, our dream of living in Spain vanished etc. but we are all doing well and the kids are much happier here with friends that accept them and lots of support at school. We are still not sure what to do about the house. We are fortunate in that it is a townhouse so easier to sell but I'm also thinking about renting it if that is possible.

If you are seriously that unhappy in Catalunya then you need to think through your plans and weigh up the pros and cons of returning to the UK. Do you have contacts there who could help find you work, a home to rent or friends/family who could take you in if need be? Are you caught in the trap of having a house in Catalunya that you cannot sell? We had friends in a similar position but they left anyway. It was very tough for them and their old home has been trashed ( they hear) but at the end of the day they still think they did the right thing as if they had stayed they would only have been putting of the inevitable and waiting for the authorities to get their way and pull their house down.

As I recall I felt great relief in many ways coming back to the UK. I no longer felt that my family and I were second class citizens. I could communicate with everyone and figure out how to get help such as financial support in the early stages, support for the kids and support with the business. Everything that felt so difficult back in Spain!

If you want to PM me for any more tips on returning to the UK please do, I'd be happy to help.

PS. Regarding the issue of the fouled dog kennel. I'm glad the hear the Police out there are taking animal neglect seriously however in the UK the Police would hand this over to the RSPCA to deal with! That way they can concentrate on catching criminals!
