Great Britain is an island situated to the northwest of Continental Europe. It is the ninth largest island in the world, and the largest European island. With a population of about 59.6 million people in mid-2008, it is the third most populated island on Earth. Great Britain is surrounded by over 1,000 smaller islands and islets. The island of Ireland lies to its west. Politically, Great Britain may also refer to the island itself together with a number of surrounding islands which comprise the territory of England, Scotland and Wales.
All of the island is territory of the sovereign state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and most of the United Kingdom's territory is in Great Britain. The term "Great Britain" (and the abbreviation 'GB') is the traditional 'short form' of the full country title 'the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland', although usage of 'the UK' has increased more recently. Most of England, Scotland, and Wales are on the island of Great Britain, as are their respective capital cities: London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff.
The Kingdom of Great Britain resulted from the political union of the kingdoms of England and Scotland with the Acts of Union 1707 on 1 May 1707 under Queen Anne.
In 1801, under a new Act of Union, this kingdom merged with the Kingdom of Ireland to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. After the Irish War of Independence, most of Ireland seceded from the Union. Currently the kingdom is named the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland commonly known as the United Kingdom, the UK, sometimes Britain is a sovereign state located off the northwestern coast of continental Europe. It is an island country, spanning an archipelago including Great Britain, the northeastern part of the island of Ireland, and many small islands. Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK with a land border, sharing it with the Republic of Ireland. Apart from this land border, the UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the English Channel and the Irish Sea.

England (i /ˈɪŋɡlənd/) is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west; the Irish Sea is to the north west, the Celtic Sea to the south west and the North Sea to the east, with the English Channel to the south separating it from continental Europe. Most of England comprises the central and southern part of the island of Great Britain in the North Atlantic. The country also includes over 100 smaller islands such as the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight.
The area now called England has been settled by people of various cultures for about 35,000 years, but it takes its name from the Angles, one of the Germanic tribes who settled during the 5th and 6th centuries. England became a unified state in AD 927, and since the Age of Discovery, which began during the 15th century, has had a significant cultural and legal impact on the wider world. The English language, the Anglican Church, and English law—the basis for the common law legal systems of many other countries around the world—developed in England, and the country's parliamentary system of government has been widely adopted by other nations. The Industrial Revolution began in 18th-century England, transforming its society into the world's first industrialised nation. England's Royal Society laid the foundations of modern experimental science.
England's terrain mostly comprises low hills and plains, especially in central and southern England. However, there are uplands in the north (for example, the mountainous Lake District, Pennines, and Yorkshire Dales) and in the south west (for example, Dartmoor and the Cotswolds). London, England's capital, is the largest metropolitan area in the United Kingdom and the largest urban zone in the European Union by most measures. England's population is about 51 million, around 84% of the population of the United Kingdom, and is largely concentrated in London, the South East and conurbations in the Midlands, the North West, the North East and Yorkshire, which developed as major industrial regions during the 19th century. Meadowlands and pastures are found beyond the major cities.
The Kingdom of England—which after 1284 included Wales—was a sovereign state until 1 May 1707, when the Acts of Union put into effect the terms agreed in the Treaty of Union the previous year, resulting in a political union with the Kingdom of Scotland to create the new Kingdom of Great Britain.[14] In 1800, Great Britain was united with Ireland through another Act of Union to become the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1922, the Irish Free State was established as a separate dominion, but the Royal and Parliamentary Titles Act in 1927 reincorporated into the kingdom six Irish counties to officially create the current United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Not sure exactly what you mean but if this helps, this is what I understand, but could be wrong!

The British Isles ( is that spelt right? ) this is a geographical term, rather than political and refers to the two Island masses of Britain and Ireland.

Britain ( or Great Britain ) - this refers to the larger of these two islands, 'great' as in larger.

British- a political term for those born or settled in either Scotland, Ireland or Wales.

United Kingdom- a political term, refers to the areas of scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland, which were politically united for the purposes of governance. ( whether you agree to that is another matter. ) Still referred to as Kingdom even though The Queen has been in power for 60 years!!!
Republic of Ireland,( Eire ) Ireland minus the Northern area, a political term. Republic as in has a President and no Head of State.

Scotland, England, Wales.... presume you know what/where they are????

Is this more or less complicated than the divisions of Spain??

'She who must be obeyed' here.................................
If the 'Old Man' would listen in the first place I am to understand from research that

Great Britain (or Britain) is England, Scotland and Wales

United Kingdom is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

The British Isles are including the above (UK) and 5,000  smaller Islands including the Isle of Man, Channel Islands, The Orkneys, The Shetland Islands, the Isle of Wight and The Isles of Scilly

Then you have the fact that the Isle of Man and Channel Islands have their own parliment, laws and different custom regulations to the the rest.

My God, all this because Holland was playing football last night. Must find him some jobs to do......

Found this definition in my Atlas!
'The British Isles are a group of islands off the northwest coast of continental Europe that include Britain, Ireland and over 6,000 smaller islands...'

Now, name the smaller islands and I'll give you a free fly swat.. Grin
