Sat Navs in Spain.

Just been back to Jolly Old for 10 days (didn't I do well ?)  Hired a car and drove about 1,000 miles in the week.  Borrowed our son's stick-on Sat Nav and flippin' glad I did.  Hit a couple of motorways I never knew existed and hit Newcastle at 5pm.  Took us through no trouble.  So, I'm thinking of getting one of my own.  Never having owned one I could do with some advice.  In UK it's easy to program in your destination using a post code but obviously they don't exist here.  Can anyone pass on their comments please.
Thanks.

We have a Garmin purchased on the Santander boat and our friend has a tom tom..Both have all European maps on..They work perfect and so much cheaper if you get them from U.K...We are returning to Spain next week and could pick you one up
Happy driving...

Do they understand directions such as:

'It's the third turning on the left after the olive tree that has a blue rock by the side of it'

if not then it wouldn't be much use to me Sad

Thanks for the kind offer G & M but the wife's still in UK so could bring me one back.  Are they really that much cheaper in UK than here ?  From what you say regarding my question about post codes (or lack of), lat/long would seem to be the only way.  I was looking at the Tom Tom XXL as with the one I borrowed, it was hard to see the top line instructions with my distance glasses on with the kit stuck on the windscreen.

Hi for of the beaten track you need something like memory map navigator  or ozi explorer with the appropriate maps, not 100% on Tortosa area but have used in Pyrenees with my PDA did once have a program with all maps of spain on think it was called compegps !
As for TomTom I use it all the time, USA and  Europe on the  PDA with updated maps and all at a Yorkshiremans type of price if you know what I me Winksad but am lost without it know.

However they are useful, but a map is better ....

My garmin and her tom tom both work via the postcodes in spain and france...Just remember to program it to the fastest route not the shortest ..Or else they take you across country and over the mountain roads..Up hill and down dale..

Which we discovered to our peril when going to Flix...So stick to the fastesr rout and that stays on mainly the A roads..

Shouldn't that be don't rely blindly on one?
Also pedantic gene kicks in despite resistance....
Common senSe! You can't make a comment on common sense and get taken seriously if you spell it wrong.
I happen to know an English teacher if you need any advice. ; )

Yes, I realise that the Spanish post codes will take you to a town but not to a street as in UK.  I like to think I'm not daft enough to follow one over the edge of a cliff.  As my lad points out, "They're a navigation aid, not a tool".  Typical smart bottomed youngster.  Grin
