FREE Health Care in Spain.

I saw a topic on free health care in Catalunya a few weeks ago, but since then heard nothing, was I seeing things or was it just wishful thinking.
If its true then surely this a very important topic and would make a massive difference to more people wanting to come over here, especially the younger couples not having to pay for private medical care.

It seems to be true, we have been paying for health care for the last 7 yrs and have recently received a letter to say we don't have to pay any more although we are not any significant age, we are just waiting for the catch. It will certainly make a difference to our bank balance.

This whole subject of health care in Europe seems to be a mess.  I went through the hoops of obtaining a residency certificate and then registering with Social Services or whatever they call it.  The next step was to register with my local health centre so I can now visit a doctor with no problems.  However, it would seem that I have to go through another application process to get a TSI card which would enable me to get free prescriptions and all the other benefits.  However, I have been issued with free prescriptions (green form) if I've had my EHIC with me but a paid one (red) if I haven't.  I'm over 65 (if that's relevent) but have not had a letter of the type mentioned above.  Is it another of the postcode lotteries that seem to apply with building regs etc ?  My wife is in UK at the moment and whilst waiting to see the doctor, saw a poster on the wall that said that you are only entitled to see a GP if you are actually resident in UK for six months of the year.  She later researched this on the net and all she found was a myriad of conflicting and confusing information.  That having been said, I know I could make an appointment with a doctor in UK with no questions asked as we have a small flat in UK and as far as they know, that's where I live.  What a flippin' mess.  What's the point of being in Europe if we are not all treated as as Europeans.  Don't get me wrong.  I'm not whinging at Catalunya.  It's a UK versus Europe shambles.

Hi,
You will find that you receive free prescriptions here with RED
forms, and have to pay for ones on GREEN forms.

HI. I'm personally not bothered as my wife is pensioned and I get free medical care as her dependant, we are and always have been registered as living permanently in Spain, Ive never been back to the UK and especially now never want to but just thought the idea of free medical care over here for all Brits is a great step forward, If true, i'm sure it would help to encourage more Brits especially the 30-40 age bracket to come over here and improve the failing housing market.
Anyone else received this letter, Keep us updated.
Terry.

Hi Terry

Me and my fiance are in the 30 - 40 years old bracket and moved here to make a living to buy our own plot of land and build our own home here in Catalunya and we would also never return to the dismal heights of what is the UK. More clear information would be great on what we need to do to, where we need to do it and what we are then entitled too. The only way of finding any clear information out is by asking as many people as you can but then you end up with completely different answers. At least it keeps you on your toes though eh?

Can I point out that public healthcare is not standardised throughout the EU,  the UK offers a particularly generous healthcare system.  We Irish know all about expensive healthcare.  We pay PRSI (like national insurance), a high proportion also pay private healthcare (I pay over 2,000 per year and this doesnt cover GP or prescriptions), we have to pay approx €50 for each GP visit, extortionate prescription prices......

In fact from where I'm sitting the Cat Salut system sounds damn near perfect while the NHS is above that again.  This new development sound excellent - there's advantages and disadvantages to all countries in the EU.  Spain has it's problems but so too have the other EU member states.
