Can anyone recommend a source of a reasonably priced weed killer. I am looking for something to be applied to large areas of scrub land rather than expensive products for patios which seems to be the normal offering.

Soldebre in Tortosa or any other of the Agricultural co-ops in your area.  Roundup mixed with something called Stranne works for me.

Roundup is expensive.  Ask for glyfosato in Sol D'Ebre.  Roughly 25 - 30 euros for 5 litres.  Dilute 80:1 with water (125ml to 10 litres water).  They'll give you a measuring beaker.  That'll last you ages.  Roundup is the same stuff.  5 litres of concentrate is enough to treat about 4 hectares.

If you research glyphosate you'll find it is very safe to use; you do not need a face mask as the molecular chain is too long to pass through the lungs into the blood. Also it is rendered impotent on contact with soil.  Contact weedkillers have a different make up, but we don't use them and have never looked into their characteristics.

Yeah you believe what it says on the tin??! Believe a company like monsanto????
Just don't spray it anywhere near me or my olives or veggies or animals.
I'm organic which means NO chemicals

No - I did my own research.

I found that 80:1 was not strng enough to deal with anything but grass. 40:1 is mush more effective on a wider range of plants. See http://www.monsanto-ag.co.uk/publications/RPB_rate_guide_hand_held_sprayers_2011... for more data.

A lot of variables.  Depends how fast you walk for example.  I have a standard fan nozzle that produces a fine spray.  I also add a couple of drops of washing up liquid to act as a surfactant.
The recommended rate in the Monsanto table suggests you would use 5 litres of concentrate/hectare whereas I'm only using 1.25 litres.  Works out a bit pricey whichever product you buy.
Works for me but I guess it's horses for courses.

Same here - can't do much good to the environment.

Another tip: If you are trying to kill off bushes, some types of ivy and especially  'Mastic' (Pistacio Lentiscus) which a sod to get rid of, use the brushcutter first to remove as much of the foliage as possible and then spray immediately onto the cut ends. I know this goes against the idea of it getting in through the leaves but the xylem is still working hard on fresh cuts and will draw the Glysophate straight into the trunk and roots.
As for Roundup being toxic, please read up before posting. Perhaps you are thinking of the 'pre-emergent' herbicides or old DDT / Paraquat based products. Different thing altogether. Roundup (Glysophate) is a very specific product that acts on the growth system of the plants, it is neutralised on contact with soil and is harmless to mammals in surprisingly high concentrations.

Roundup 'Extra' is what I was advised to use as it is safe should animals then consume the vegetation once sprayed.
