Storms and rain

Torrential rain fell in parts of Murcia and Alicante yesterday.
There had been fear of droughts in these areas, as very little rain has fell there since August.

We have just had a massive hail and thunder here.I have never seen anything like it. The hailstones were huge it went on for an hour. The land looked like it had snowed.  There is just a ring of small Olives around the bases of the trees This years crop in this area has been wiped out. I guess that sorted the fires out.

In Rasquera area the rain was accompanied by a massive hail storm which lasted about 20 min. The result is that the olive trees have been stripped of their fruit & soft fruits such as peaches have been badly damaged. Hail stones smashing into a near ripe peach destroys it. Its a heartbreak to see tonnes of  beautiful fruit on the ground. Cry

Really, really sorry to hear that Smidge, it's heartbreaking, I know, it happened to us last year we lost our whole olive crop due to a cold snap when the trees were full of 'mostra'.  I fear the rain in Murcia and Alicante is probably too late to give anything like a decent crop if it has been dry for more than nine months.  As if times aren't hard enough  Sad

Thanks Pondgirl. Its been a bizzare few days around here. For days we were under threat from huge fires burning all around. Helicopters, planes , fire trucks, smoke, evacuations,
then suddenly out of the blue a massive hail storm that left the land looking like mid winter covered in white slush while the sun was shining. Now people have to clean up their orchards and fields instead of taking the fruit to the market it goes in a big rotting piles while wondering where they are going to get the money for requirements for the rest of the year. Mind blowing.

Now that the bad weather has passed over everything is back to normal. All the near ripe fruit that was hit by the hail has been removed and dumped. Where the hail was heavy and big there has been 100% wipe out less where the hail was lighter.
Sorry. not fully normal as the dumped fruit fermented the local boars had some party by the looks of the flattened grass and broken stone walls, so still that to repair. Otherwise onward and upwards.   Smiley
