Many ex pats in Spain do not realise that when you die things happen very quickly. If there are no suspicious circumstances they will try to bury or cremate you within a couple of days.

However, before the undertakers will remove your body, they will require part payment for the funeral, taxes and legal paperwork. This is usually in excess of 3000 euros. No money and the body stays where it is. A Spanish funeral now costs in excess of 6000 euros.

If you have not made provision for this it can be a bit of a shock for your dependents or loved ones.

There is another way. We have 2 solutions to this problem. An insurance backed funeral plan can be as cheap as 100 euros per year depending on age. For this plan you have to be able to state that you are in good health. This can also be paid monthly.

The other plan is by paying a lump sum. The lump sum can be paid by instalments. Once fully paid the plan covers the cost of the funeral for the remainder of your life. This plan is available no matter what your health issues are.

So, with either of these plans, if something happens you give the undertaker the policy document and everything is taken care of.
