Be aware, that there is a three month purge taking place.
So make sure you are wearing a seatbelt.
Do not use a mobile phone while driving.
Check that your driving licence is plastic type and not out of date.
Check also that you have all the things in the car required by law: red warning triangles, reflective jacket, first aid kit etc. etc.
On the spot fines!

According to the AA a first aid kit is NOT required in a private car in Spain

Correct.
I always thought that first aid kit and fire extinguisher were mandatory, in Spain but they are not.
But recommended.
A few years ago a lady was stopped by police in Southern Spain. The police checked everything, all was in order, but they fined her for not having disposable gloves in her first aid kit!

While driving in Spain you are required by law to carry the following items. Hefty on-the-spot fines can be issued for failing to carry specific items:

Reflective jackets (Although not mandatory to carry, someone walking on the road or hard shoulder can be fined if not wearing one)
Warning triangle (compulsory in every vehicle with 4 wheels or more) (Residents must carry 2)
Headlamp beam deflectors (Depending on your car, you will either need deflector stickers or have to adjust the beam manually)
Motorcyclists: Crash helmets are compulsory for riders of mopeds, motorcycles, trikes and quads, unless these are equipped with seat belts. Motorcycles on the road must have their lights on at all times.

*Lights (It is no longer compulsory for vehicles to carry a set of spare bulbs and the tools to fit them)
