CIU = merger of Convergencia and Unio. Catalan conservatives with Convergencia being more Catalan nationalist than Unio. Have pretty much ruled Catalonia since democracy was restored and are mired in a fair few corruption scandals. Might have something to do with their rather sudden desire to achieve independence.

ERC = Esquerra Republicana. Left-wing nationalist party who are benefiting the most from the flag-waving and push for independence.

PSC = Catalan branch of the PSOE, Labour in other words. Opposed to independence and have lost a lot of weight as result.

IU= Izquierda Unida. Ex communists and the Green party all rolled into one. Going nowhere fast.

PP= Partido Popular. Spanish conservatives and political heirs to Franco. Rapidly becoming irrelevant in Catalonia due to Central Office in Madrid being anti-Catalan.

Ciutadans = Right wing populist party started in Catalunya  as an alternative to the PP and has since spread to the rest of Spain. Never ruled anywhere but on the up.

Podemos = Left wing populist party that is sweeping the polls along with Ciutadans mainly on an anti-corruption agenda. Podemos didn't present any candidates for the municipal elections but did encourage citizens to stand. As a result the electoral lists all have different names in different towns:  Movem Tortosa or Barcelona en Comu.
