Newbies in Tivenys and Primary School Help

(Apologies, reposting this again in the correct area of the forum...)

Hi there,

Our family is in the process of buying a house in Tivenys, we are from UK and are currently based in Andalusia, having moved 3 month ago. As doing research from down here is a little tricky before the move, we would like to ask for some advice regarding enrolling our 10 year old daughter into a local primary school. Can someone recommend a school or have some info regarding enrolling process, enrolling dates, any contact names? Our daughter has started picking up some basic Spanish and learning from language apps (we are home schooling her at the mo), no Catalan at this point unfortunately...Does anyone have any experience of integrating their kid into the local community and a school at such an age?
Many thanks in advance, your advice will be much appreciated!

Hi Marianna and Dan
I have two children that were accepted into the
Local school in El perello about 9  1/2 years ago,
And recently they have moved up to the local high school
Which is all integrated with primary school and junior school
So three schools all together.
As far as I can remember and I hope this of help and correct you will need
Your passports ,n.i.e number green paper ,they call it family book here ,
But they accept birth certificate , marriage certificate , medical card cat salut
Or ehic card, and padro I think.
If you photo copy everything as well.
Ours were enrolled just before September ,but I think its worth
Enrolling asap.
Have tivenys not got a decent local school, your daughter
Will find it easier to integrate with the local kids and be accepted.??
If you don't speak the language take a translator, you might
Need help filling forms in .Ie medical problems if any
Or a friend that speaks Catalan ,it will be a plus if u can.
It sounds quite a lot ,but once it's done it's done,
But you might have to repeat same process for high school,
But it's same paperwork.
Ask about school books as well ???
She will need pens etc but ask
You might need an agenda or diary for notes etc.
Ask also for school fiestas as well as they can catch you out !!!
She will need a small p e bag for change of t shirt , hairbrush .
She might be advised to take packed sandwiches and a small bottle water.
If she has a mobile phone ,make sure it's switched off in class, cause
If it rings it WILL be confiscated, she must not use it in class either.
Ours don't need school uniform,so I guess it's the trend.
I hope this of help and if I think of anything else I will
Add to it .
Good luck.

We enrolled our two (then 9 & 11) in Feb when we arrived.
Trips to Ajuntament and school, and to the kid's horror, they were in school the next day.

They were given extra lessons in Catalan, replacing the religious classes, and soon hit the ground running.

You are more then welcome.
Re agenda.
The purpose for it is,for your daughter to
Write homework in,and her teacher to send notes
To you ,but you can use it to write in if
You have any concerns or wish to see s teacher,
They call it reunion here.
Re books ,my children in the Junior school
Use to recycle their books to hand down to next year.ask at school if they have recycling for books
It is a big saving.
Pens etc I have always bought mine from
Chinese shop it is a big saving.
When my children went up to senior
School that part of school didn't do recycling
So you have to buy them.
The school will give you a list online and you
Have to order from local shop.
It sounds a lot but it's better to be
Prepared
She will need also a face flannel in her p.e.bag.
Best wishes.

More info.
Re school dinners.
Our local school do school dinner
For infant and junior children, but it
Depends on what hours your daughter does.
If I remember correctly you get the form
From school canteen and pay at the bank
But it might have changed by now.
Price was 6.00 euros but I had to buy in
5s only.
Beware thou there is an expirey date
Its not on voucher and I don't think
Canteen will tell you ask where the voucher needs to be posted.
Re docs etc appointment. In my childrens high school,if they have an appointment in school time you have to sign a book name etc and reason why, when you go to the app ask for a note as proof, and your dsughter needs to hand in to her teacher ,then if she returns to school after app just sign her back in.
Your daughter might need a calculater,
Just s good cheap one will do.
Re paperwork you need.
Take originals for all of you, they need to
See originals.
Green nie  papers
All passports.
Marriage cert.
All birth certificates, they call it family book here
Medical card.
Padro I think.
Photo copy it all.
You will be pulling your hair out trying to
Get it right but it gets easier .
I am pleased she is going to a local school,
She will find it easier to integrate and be
Accepted the same for you.
Best wishes. And good luck.
Let me know how u get on

You will get used to the requirement to bring reams of original and copied paperwork with you.  When I went to register my daughter - then 3 - for school in expectation of our move here I didn't have her birth certificate.  I didn't think they might have a raft of people trying to register other people's kids for school!  Fortunately friends were coming out a few days later and brought it with them.  Problem solved!   They did accept the 'short' version of the birth certificate where the parents are not named so I'm still not sure what it added to the whole exercise.

Good luck!
Mike

In our experience over ten years the town/village schools have been great and very accomodating.
Our village school took all our high school kids on for a few months and did intense Catalan lessons with them. The older ones were packed off to high school where their good grounding allowed them to integrate very quickly. The youngest high schoolers they kept for the rest of the school year and then started them at year dot again in high school so they were a year out on ages. They operate the redo the year if you fail system here so any age difference is irrelevant over a few years.
The headmasters and staffs have been excellent and even though our last child left the primary school about seven years ago we still have a close relationship with our local primary. We sent one of their alumni along with two lambs for a class visit last week.
I agree with everyone's previous input too.
Personal recommendation, get her watching local and Spanish tv as soon as possible and access to
Whatsapp. : )

I think also that its important that if u
Can get extra catalan or spanish lessons at
School then take them.
Mike and bruixot are right in what they say.
The schools are very accomadating.
Also someone might now of a teacher that gives extra lessons in due tjme .
My daughter is 14 now and helps the teachers
With their English studies.!!!!!
I think also that the school might have a
Facebook page.
