Get a can of decent spray (not zum or bloom as they're useless). Wait till nearly dark when they're off to bed, give a good spray and run away!!!

You can get long range sprays at some co-operatives (Sol D'Ebre included I think).  Basically an aerosol can with a nozzle that allows you to spray killer foam from a few meters away.

Sounds mad I know, But - tie string around your trouser ankles and jacket cuffs, wear gloves, and cover your head and face with fine net. Wasps are viscous little sods and *WILL*  attack you if you go near the nest - especially if they think you are going to interfere with it. I learned the hard way once when I had one on an allotment. I just poured petrol down the hole and lit it. It worked but I got stung again and again. Be *very* careful and keep pets and children indoors if you have any.

The long range spray is specifically designed to deal with the nest without you getting attacked.

Speaking from past experience this summer and having had three horrendous wasp attacks, 17 on the first occasion, I kid you not. I tried various commercial sprays  and they just returned in greater force.

The only mixture that worked was mixing diesel with diesel oil in an old garden insect, long range sprayer. I went out at night with a battery light and attacked the buggers again and again. Be careful some have night rear guards loitering in the dark.

Though I did find other horrendous nests they were in other parts of the garden where wood was stacked. The yellow jackets chew the wood to a pulp to make their nests.

There are still loads of them about! Angry

Parrafin or central heating oil in a garden spray....the oil stops them flying and also provides the 'burn'....obviously if its in the roof or in a wooden shed you need a foam spray....Rentokil flog a big 300ml can for about a fiver in the UK

Be warned these insects are the hoodies of the insect world and I have suffered many times at thier stings from an old warrior forget sprays, protective clothing and running away the best way to deal with them is make the wife do it.

Used that long range spray from the car and it worked...however,the survivors returned and in true Mad Max style,a new colony was born.Last night we noticed that something had removed the nest and put it on the top of the wall and had eaten the grubs and half the remaining nest,Has anyone got any ideas as I would like to shake this creature by the  hand.

Yes, they will move back into old nests (easier than building a new one).  Best bet is when you've sprayed the nest and when there's no wasps around, smash the nest up.  If you find out what your sympathetic creature was, can you ask him how he feels about rabbits.  What with them and the flies this year, I've developed a persecution complex.
