Just a word of warning. we have had workers here two of which cut down an old fig tree. Next day they were covered in sap burns, raised blisters on their arms and legs. The doctor diagnosed this straight away but we were racking our brains and thought that they were insect bites. So beware they are painful and can last for a long time.

There are little wasps that without them the humble fig would be no more. I have been put off them some what after reading about this phenomenon. Removing a dead tree is the exception however a lot of the sap burns appear to be caused by pruning the tree at the wrong time it should be done in the dormant months (Winter) You should of course wear gloves/long pants.

A few interesting things about fig tres:
  • There are 750 species of fig trees
  • The fig is only polinated by the fig wasp of which there are 350 known species. It was thought only 1 species of wasp polinated 1 species of tree however this is now known to be false as some polinate more than one.
  • The fig wasp only reproduces in the fig so the two, tree and wasp, are 100% reliant on each other for survival.
  • The fig flower is inside the fruit hence no visible flowers.
  • In Spain there is a saying 'El que come higo sin mirar come carne sin pensar'. This translates to 'He who eats a fig without looking eats meat without thinking', referring to the fact you may be eating the wasp or lavae that are inside the fig.
  • Some fig trees produce an early crop in the spring, these in Spanish are called 'Breves' (pronounced brebes).
