Driving back from Brico Depot yesterday on the N340, we saw a number of palms near the road that have obviously been hit by this nasty little beast.  Brown drooping fronds or fronds missing altogether.  A very sad site.  The sightings dropped off as we travelled a bit further north but it's obviously spreading.  There's plenty of info on the web if you Google "Red Palm Weevil"

We visited friends in the Algarve, Portugal around four years ago, and some palms there were affected.
A sad sight.
They were trying to eradicate the pests at the time, but feared
it would spread, which seems it has.

If you have palms it's worth reading up about the problem as there are prevention and curative measures you can take.  I assume it's spreading northwards.
